TRANSFORMATION TODAY: Trimac's Million Dollar Payback

In tight times, every penny counts. For Trimac Corp., one the largest bulk truck
carriers in North America, every penny counts even in good times. Shipping bulk
liquids and solids such as chemicals is a notoriously low-margin business, so earlier
this year Trimac turned to a new business intelligence platform to help it run its
operations as efficiently as possible.

The system has already delivered a major payback in the form of $1 million in reduced
costs to date, with an expected overall savings of more than $2 million in its first
full year of operations, according to Ted Barnicoat, Trimac's CIO. The platform cost
Trimac about $400,000, which was mainly spent on software licensing costs, Barnicoat
said. --Richard Karpinski
