Flight 587 Reports Puzzling

(Conspiracy Nation, 11/14/01) -- Authorities have found the flight
data recorder, says Associated Press writer Diego Ibarguen in an AP
story dated Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, the same day that American Airlines
Flight 587 crashed in Queens, New York. [1]

"Investigators on Tuesday found the flight data recorder," reports the
Las Vegas Sun on Nov. 13th. [2]

Ibarguen's report issued Monday, Nov. 12 states that authorities have
found the flight data recorder. The Las Vegas Sun states that the
flight data recorder was found on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

  -- FBI: "No Indication" --

A Fox News report notes that "Bush administration officials said the
FBI believed an explosion occurred aboard the jet..." [3]

"There appeared to have been an explosion in the air." Debris was
"flying all over the place before the plane crashed to the ground,"
stated one witness. [4]

Another witness, a firefighter, is quoted as saying, "Whatever
happened, it happened in the air. The plane was already in pieces
before it hit the ground." [5]

By about noon on Nov. 12, the FBI was saying "there was no indication
[of] a terror attack or that there was an explosion on board." [6]

Retired firefighter Tom Lynch is quoted as saying, "It definitely
exploded in the sky." [7]

Eyewitness Antonio Villela is quoted as saying, "First I heard a big
explosion. Then I saw flames come out from behind the plane. And then
a whole wing with the engine fell off." [8]

  -- GE: CF6-80C2 "Phenomenally Reliable" --

The Flight 587 Airbus had two CF6-80C2 engines, manufactured by
General Electric Co. GE believes the CF6-80C2 engines are
"phenomenally reliable." [9]

In March of this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
directed airlines to inspect the engines for possible cracks in
turbine rotor discs. [10]

But General Electric "was not aware of any recent operational problems
with its CF6-80C2 engine." [11]

The CF6-80C2 engine is used on more than one-thousand other aircraft,
worldwide, including Air Force One, the plane which carries the U.S.
president. [12] These planes have not been grounded.

  -- Birds and Jamaica Bay --

An un-named source "close to the investigation" says the National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is checking to see whether ingested
birds caused the CF6-80C2 engines to fail. The report, in the Las
Vegas Sun, uses the plural, "engines", suggesting a sudden failure by
both of Flight 587's engines. [13]

Kennedy (JFK) Airport, from which the doomed flight originated, runs
along Jamaica Bay. New York governor George Pataki "at first said the
pilot dumped fuel in Jamaica Bay before the plane went down." [14]
Pataki later backed away from his dumped fuel assertions.

According to Conspiracy Nation source Rhea Fortean (pseudonym), John
Gibson on Fox News wonders "if something goes on at JFK airport."
Gibson reportedly is puzzled that previous crashes of TWA Flight 800,
"EgyptAir, SwissAir" and now Flight 587 all originated at JFK Airport.

  -- Market Saved --

"The market is going down with the plane. We still don't know if it is
an accident or an attack," worried a French stock market trader. [15]

Later that day, Nov. 12th, the NTSB "said all available information
indicated the crash was accidental." [16]

"Stocks and the dollar fell on news of the crash but recovered as the
NTSB pointed to an accident." [17]
