Anger over Marsden's 'treachery' Labour Party defector Paul Marsden is facing accusations of treachery from the close aide who oversaw his election as a Labour MP six months ago. The anti-war rebel MP declared himself "sick" of Government spin when he ended speculation about his future by jumping ship to the Liberal Democrats. Mansell Williams, president of the Constituency Labour Party and Mr Marsden's MP's agent in the 2001 General Election, said the MP did not inform him of his decision to defect. Mr Williams said: "When I last spoke to him on December 6, he reassured me that he would fight on within the Labour Party. "He has not contacted any member of the local party since last Thursday, although we have tried to contact him. "He has treated local party members with contempt. He has betrayed us. But more importantly, he has betrayed the people of Shrewsbury and Atcham who voted Labour in June. "He has used outrageous language and accusations in order to crank up the impact of his defection to the Lib Dems. We are shocked and appalled at the dishonourable manner in which he has behaved." Conservative Party chairman David Davies joined senior Labour figures in calling on Mr Marsden to resign and fight a by-election for his Shrewsbury and Atcham seat, a safe Tory constituency before he took it in 1997. Mr Marsden is attempting to brazen it out, insisting voters had turned out for him and not the Government. He said he had been contemplating his widely-predicted defection for "many months". That was long before he clashed with Government Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong over his opposition to the Afghanistan war and his claimed bust-up with fellow Labour MPs over his opposition to Labour's anti-terrorism Bill.
