A terrorist bomb attack occurred Sunday morning [9 December 2001] at a bus stop used by soldiers returning to their base on Bar-Yehuda Street in Haifa, near the Checkpost Junction. Northern District Police Chief Borovski reports the number of injured in the suicide bombing attack appears relatively low. Borovski added that the preliminary information reveals one of the security personnel assigned to the busy bus stop spotted the suicide terrorists, making eye contact, prompting him to detonate the bomb early, explaining the small number of wounded. Meanwhile, Idan Cohen, 17, has died of injuries sustained in the Jerusalem Ben-Yehuda suicide bombings last Saturday. The death toll is now 11. Twenty-six victims remain in Hadassah Hospitals in Jerusalem. Nine victims of last Sunday's suicide bus bombing in Haifa remain admitted to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. ............................ :: MUFTI: "SUICIDE BOMBINGS ARE JUSTIFIED": The mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Akrameh Sabri, says that suicide bombings are justified and should be encouraged, according to a report published on Friday in the international Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat. Sabri was appointed by PLO leader Yasir Arafat. During a visit to Abu Dhabi, Sabri criticized the Muslim religious leaders in Egypt and Saudi Arabia who issued an Islamic ruling (fatwa) against suicide attacks. According to Sabri, "We must not stand in the way of the intifada and jihad [holy war]. Rather, we must stand at their side and encourage them." ............................ :: IT'S OFFICIAL: PA/PLO SUPPORTS TERRORISM: Following a marathon five-hour meeting Monday night, the Israeli government declared the Palestinian Authority a "terrorist supporting entity." The security cabinet - Prime Minister Sharon, Foreign Minister Peres, and Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer - will decide on the specific steps to take in light of this decision. The government also declared the Tanzim, Arafat's personal Force 17, and Fatah [which is headed by Arafat] as terrorist entities, and will take action against them and their leaders accordingly. It was further decided to prevent Arafat from leaving the autonomous areas. [Editor's note: How long till the PA/PLO is itself declared a terrorist entity?] Tourism Minister Benny Elon said that calling the PA/PLO a "terrorist-supporting entity" has practical ramifications: "It means, for instance, that the PA television and radio stations can be bombed.... I think that Peres, by walking out last night and fighting this decision, understood correctly that there is no more Tenet, Mitchell, or Oslo. ............................ :: ISRAEL RETAILIATES FOR ATTACKS: Israel effectively grounded Arafat when it launched an evening air-strike destroying his three helicopters at his headquarters in the Gaza Strip Monday. Israel also struck at Palestinian bases inside Jenin whose suicide bombers have murdered more than a score of Israelis in recent weeks. The IDF offensive continued Tuesday with helicopter attacks on PA/PLO police buildings in Ram'Allah, Gaza, and Salfit (south of Ariel). Four missiles were fired in Ram'Allah at a building practically next door to Arafat's office. The IDF entered PA/PLO-controlled areas around Ram'Allah, Shechem, and Tul Karem Monday night. The army also destroyed the Gaza airport runway used by Arafat. Israel Air Force jets strafed a mortar-shell manufacturing factory in central Gaza early Friday morning. The factory is located in a neighborhood called Arafat City, next to many buildings of the PA/PLO para-military force. The Israeli bombing followed the firing of 12 mortar shells by the Arabs Thursday at Jewish communities in Gush Katif. Palestinians fired at an IDF outpost near N'vei Dekalim Friday morning; no one was hurt. ............................ :: PA/PLO ARRESTS MINOR PLAYERS: Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said Thursday that the PA/PLO has arrested "no more than 2-3 significant terrorists -- and even they are being held in hotel-like conditions. Arafat says his forces have arrested 180 militants since Sunday. But Israel accuses him of acting in bad faith, charging that those apprehended are low-level figures, not the real planners of attacks. The PA/PLO reached an agreement with Hamas Friday afternoon to reduce the terms of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin's house arrest, ARMY RADIO reported. In response, Yassin instructed Hamas protestors to conduct a peaceful funeral procession for a Hamas activist killed in clashes with PA/PLO police on Thursday. A second straight day of clashes had been expected between supporters of Hamas and PA/PLO police forces in Gaza on Friday. Hamas members had also threatened to attack senior Palestinian Authority officials if Yassin is kept under house arrest, ISRAEL RADIO reported. ............................ :: REVITALIZING NORTH AMERICAN ALIYAH: There are those to whom aliyah (immigration to Israel) is so important that they are even willing to pay others to do it. The newly-founded Nefesh B'Nefesh organization <http://www.nefeshbnefesh.org>, under the leadership of Rabbi Joshua Fass, has raised some ten million dollars, and hopes to raise ten times that, for the purpose of encouraging Jews to move to Israel. Its goal is to "revitalize North American Aliyah." In light of the financial difficulties of the aliyah process -- pilot trips, buying a home, acquiring and shipping household appliances and furnishings, lost income -- which can even lead to a permanent delay in aliyah plans, Nefesh B'Nefesh will "provide significant financial assistance to each family [and individual] to enable them to make their dream of Aliyah a reality." This assistance, ranging from $5,000 to $60,000, will be considered a grant after the recipients have been in Israel for three years; if they leave earlier, they must return it. Another organization working for the aliyah process is Project Shofar. Based in Kiryat Arba, Israel, Project Shofar is run by Gary Cooperberg. The organization seeks to awaken American Jews -- and Jews around the world as well -- to the importance of making aliyah. The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Monday for six resolutions criticising Israel. The resolutions, none of them binding, were adopted despite a plea by Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Yehuda Lancry, for the assembly not to "endow Palestinian terrorism with an international legitimacy". Most of the resolutions had been adopted by strong majorities every year at this time for more than two decades. One of the resolutions declared that Israel's Basic Law -- which proclaimed Jerusalem as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state -- was "illegal and therefore null and void and has no validity whatsoever." The resolution received 130 votes in favor; Nauru was the only country to join Israel in voting against, while the United States was among 10 which abstained. A resolution "stressing the illegality of Israel's settlement construction and activities on the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967" was adopted by 90 votes to five with 54 abstentions. Another, stressing the need for "the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people" to self-determination and an independent state, received 131 votes in support, six against and 20 abstentions. [Editor's note: I guess the United States will be bombing the UN next since it now harbors, supports, and encourages terrorism.] ............................ :: MEANWHILE, IN GENEVA ....: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, Wednesday called again for the establishment of an international monitoring presence in Yesha [Judea, Samaria, and Gaza] to ensure that global human rights standards were being observed [although she called Yesha "occupied Palestinian territories". This, however, only shows ignorance on her part as the "Palestinians" never controlled Yesha. In fact, the "Palestinian people" never existed before 1967. Prior to 1967, Jordan controlled most of Yesha.]. The High Commissioner noted that UN bodies such as the Security Council, the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights have repeatedly reaffirmed the "de jure applicability" [lawful application] of the Convention to Yesha. ............................ :: ANTI-SEMITISM ALIVE AND WELL ON ARAB TV: The prototype of modern anti-Semitism, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is alive and well in the Arab media. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) reports that several Arab television stations, including those in Egypt, are broadcasting a special series on the "evidence" of a Jewish conspiracy to rule the world, as described in the above Czarist anti-Semitic tract. While "Protocols" is still widely sold in the Arab world, this is the first television series on the subject purporting to show how the Jews and Israel act today to enact the strategy described in the work. The TV series states that "19 of the 24 protocols [have already] been put into practice" -- and then proceeds to give "examples". For instance, the presidency of Bill Clinton is alleged to be the application of a Jewish plot to "choose someone corrupt [for the presidency of the superpower] and when he resists us -- we will expose him." ............................
