Genetic experiment leads to two-beaked chicken Scientists have rearranged a bird's face by using only two chemicals. They managed to produce a chicken with two beaks. Researchers exposed chicken embryos to one chemical which prevents bone growth and another related to vitamin A which turns on genes. Nature reports the two chemicals transformed the patterns in which bone, cartilage and other tissues were laid down. Both occur naturally in the developing embryo and have a number of jobs to do but it seems their concentration has a major influence on the fate of individual cells. The discovery may not directly help in the understanding of facial deformities in humans but it does offer some insight. The research was carried out by Joy Richman of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
