Islam: The Original Champion of Women's Rights

History has shown wherever these God- given rights have been upheld,
society has flourished and prospered. These rights were ordained at a
time when other prominent cultures indulged in the purchase, sale,
trade and enslavement of women, then considered as little more than
chattel, a burden and curse. In the 6th century, Islam afforded the
following unprecedented rights which, fifteen centuries later, most
Americans hold as inalienable.

Women have the divine right to:

Life!
Respect, as a daughter, sister, wife and mother, and as a woman
Inheritance
Basic and higher education
Self-select a husband
Draft a pre-nuptial agreement and accept or reject any point therein
Reject a marriage proposal or an arranged marriage, as she likes
Retain their surname after marriage
Hold designated wedding gifts as independent property
Financial maintenance, food, clothing and shelter during marriage
Seek unbiased arbitration in the event of marital dispute
Not marry
Bear children and receive support from the child(ren)'s father
Be revered by their children
Practice birth control
Divorce
Financial support during divorce process
Child support
Alimony
Manage her own personal, social and financial affairs
Maintain independent banking and finances
Own property entirely independent of their father, uncle, brother, or husband
Pursue a career
Own and operate a business
Employ and work alongside men
Preside as Judge and issue legal judgments
Testify in a Court of Law
Represent herself in legal matters
Seek legal redress and legal representation
Vote, and to run for political office
Travel
Pray in congregation
Lead women in prayer
Perform pilgrimage; visit holy places
Teach
Address public gatherings

Some of these rights are subject to specific conditions and are
stated here in a general sense, which in no way indicates Islamic Law
is without complexities. Of noteworthy interest is the fact that
every Muslim is commanded by the Almighty in the Holy Book of Muslims
known as the Qur'an to "Revere the wombs that bore you." Islamic
tradition, handed down from Prophet Muhammad (unto him be peace) also
narrates, "Heaven lies at the feet of the mother."

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe
simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not
believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do
not believe in anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not
believe in anything merely on the authority of Teachers, elders or wise men.
Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it
agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all.
Then accept it and live up to it."
