Some al-Qaida fighters likely entered Afghanistan via Tehran ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Editor's note: WorldNetDaily brings readers exclusive, up-to-the-minute global intelligence news and analysis from Geostrategy-Direct, a new online newsletter edited by veteran journalist Robert Morton and featuring the "Backgrounder" column compiled by Bill Gertz. Geostrategy-Direct is a subscription-based service produced by the publishers of WorldTribune.com, a free news service frequently linked by the editors of WorldNetDaily. © 2001 WorldNetDaily.com The trail in the worldwide hunt for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is leading to Iran, according to U.S. officials. Airline ticket receipts uncovered in al-Qaida hideouts in the hills of Tora Bora indicate that foreign fighters entered Afghanistan after traveling through Tehran International Airport. U.S. intelligence officials believe Iran may provide a better escape route than the central Asian nations north of Afghanistan or Pakistan to the south. The reason: Iran has no formal diplomatic ties with the United States and thus cannot be counted on to cooperate in capturing bin Laden, blamed by U.S. officials for the September 11 attacks. “There are strong indications of an Iranian connection (to al-Qaida),” said one U.S. official in a position to know. Bin Laden in the past has sent al-Qaida emissaries to western Iran to set up cells there. U.S. intelligence agencies also have reports from the late 1990s linking bin Laden to Iranian intelligence. One report stated that bin Laden met with an Iranian intelligence official in Khartoum, Sudan in 1996. Border controls in areas of western Iran are said to be lax and the region has been known to be a drug transshipment route for illegal narcotics from Pakistan. Vice President Richard B. Cheney said last week that he had not heard reports that bin Laden might have succeeded in sneaking out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan. “I hadn't heard Iran,” Cheney said. “Best guess is Afghanistan or Pakistan, but at this stage I can't be any more precise than that.” *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
