-Caveat Lector- From: lyn milnes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Where did the homeless go? Where are they now? Anyone tracking this?
It's unclear where they went... One thing is known: this past October and November, Giuliani called for a crackdown on the homeless people who were sleeping on the grounds of a church in midtown which was in the same neighborhood as Tiffany's, et al; in other words, a rather upscale neighborhood. The church runs a homeless shelter which only has something like 12 beds; for years it had been in the habit of allowing any 'overflow' to sleep on its property overnight, as long as the homeless did not set up before 9pm and were gone by 6am...the city had allowed this practice for years... But in October Dick Cheney came to town and apparently was going to stay at a hotel in the area, so Guiliani directed that the homeless be forced off of PRIVATE property so that Cheney would not have to see them (begging the question of WHY the Veep of the U.S. shouldn't have to see that there are people in this country who are homeless)... Guiliani claimed it was only for the week that Cheney was in town, but 2 weeks later Ariel Sharon came to visit and the crackdown continued, and remained thru November, when the church successfully got an injuction against the city to stop the crackdown; the court ruled in the church's favor not only because the city was overstepping it's bounds by forcing the homeless off of private property, but also because the city had allowed the practice for years previously... Giuliani was only concerned with removing what he considered an eyesore; he knew the church only has 12 beds in its 'official' shelter...and as was typical policy for his whole administration, he was only concerned with removing the homeless from the public's site, and NOT in providing additional beds at 'official' shelters, indeed he did nothing to help existing shelters to add more space or to have more shelters constructed... So keep that in mind when Giuliani gives speeches regarding his supposed compassionate policy towards the homeless...
