N. Texans raise money for Iraq project 01/05/2002 By KRISTEN HOLLAND / The Dallas Morning News A handful of North Texas peace advocates have united to raise money for the Iraq Water Project. Coordinated by Veterans for Peace and Life for Relief and Development, or LIFE, the Iraq Water Project sends volunteers to Iraq to help rebuild its water treatment plants so that residents will have clean drinking water. The Rev. Frank Mabee, a founder of the Dallas Center for Human Rights, is coordinating the local effort with Hadi Jawad, secretary of the American Muslim Alliance, and Johnny Wolf, a set designer and Quaker. "I believe so strongly, as do the Quakers and the Sufi Muslims, that you cannot win the end of violence by violence," Mr. Mabee said. "We wanted so much to show a sign that you do give love to those that oppress you. We w anted a symbolic act that says that loud and clear." Mr. Jawad said water-borne diseases have become one of the leading causes of death in the country. "I was devastated to hear ... that the largest cause of deaths among children under 5 in Iraq is caused by water-borne diseases," he said. Malnutrition and a lack of medicine are the other major causes, he said. "We thought that the Iraqis, just like anybody else on this planet, have been given rights by the United Nations," he said, "and one of those rights is the right to have clean drinking water." Last spring, the trio formed the Committee in Solidarity with the People of Iraq. Mr. Jawad said the group wants to collect enough money to refurbish two water treatment plants in the southern, remote regions of Iraq. Members anticipate that it will cost about $98,000 to rebuild and maintain the Al-Tawi and Al-Hudaidah treatment facilities. "These two plants, when they're completed next spring, will supply clean drinking water to 15,000 Iraqi citizens for 10 years," he said. Mr. Mabee said he doesn't know who will travel to Iraq, except that he hopes a few North Texans will make the trip. The group has permission to send three volunteers. For "Hadi, it wouldn't be safe," Mr. Mabee said, "and my health wouldn't permit me." Mr. Jawad echoed Mr. Mabee's comments, explaining that he would like to go but is uncertain how U.S. officials would respond to a naturalized citizen traveling to Iraq to provide clean drinking water. He moved to the Unit ed States from Pakistan as a teenager 30 years ago. The uncertainty about the American government's response hasn't stopped him from raising money for the project. And recent events haven't kept people from donating either, he said. "Most people, when they hear about the plight of the Iraqi people, the intense humanitarian crisis that is raging in their country today, and how the mainstream media does not want to address that issue, most people are horrified," Mr. Jawad said, "and very eager to help."
