-Caveat Lector- Their Speech is Full of Hate by Linda Bowles
The Wanderer; March 14, 1996 The current political campaign will test whether it is possible to have an open debate on substantive issues. Let's sample what has happened to Patrick Buchanan over the past few weeks. CNN's Mary Tillotson compared him to the religious fanatic Ayatollah Khomeini, NBC's Bryant Gumbel referred to him as Pat Pukechanon, and AFL-CIO President John Sweeney called him a racist, an anti-Semite and a woman basher. The San Francisco Chronicle used words like "divisive" and "hate-mongering." Various media in Israel attacked Buchanan. He was called "an American Mussolini and caricatured as Adolph Hitler. Israel's English-language newspaper, the Jerusalem Post, said he was a "'respectable' anti-Semite in the classic mold." He was even assaulted by latent liberals and fair-weather conservatives in the Republican Party. Newt Gingrich called him reactionary, General Colin Powell accused him of delivering "messages of intolerance," and presidential candidate Bob Dole used words such as fringe, intolerant and extreme. Bill "Man of Virtues" Bennett was so pained that he endorsed Lamar " Quick Bucks" Alexander. I was confused about this until it occurred to me that Bill was probably drumming up more business for his brother, Bob Bennett, Clinton's criminal lawyer. On ABC's David Brinkley show, Sam Donaldson chided Buchanan for believing the universe was created -- as opposed to just popping into existence by accident, which, as every smart person knows, is the way it actually happened. And on the same program, it became obvious that what really irks columnist George Will, what sends shudders through his delicate, elitist frame, is the idea that Buchanan is some kind of populist who not only identifies with but actually embraces the common man. Will's body language said, "Ugh!" Alas, no matter how hard you listen, you do not hear love in these voices. Indeed, you hear speech that is intolerant and exclusionary. You hear speech that is judgmental. Dare I say it, you hear speech that is full of hate. I would caution my liberal friends that such inflammatory rhetoric might create a climate of violence and push some vulnerable left-wing zealot over the edge. Thank God that Buchanan is now under the protection of the Secret Service. There's obviously a price to pay if you dare talk forthrightly about moral decay, social degeneracy, welfare dependency, illegal immigration or the breakdown of the family, or if you are so bold as to challenge some of the conventional wisdom about trade policy and foreign relations. What are Buchanan's sins? He is called an anti-Semite for saying that the state of Israel has undue influence in Washington, D.C. He is declared a racist because he dares believe merit, not skin color, should be the basis for employment decisions, college admissions and contract awards. He is labeled a homophobe for suggesting homosexuality might not be as natural as a day in spring or as American as apple pie. He is judged a bigot for recognizing that we are suffering a disastrous immigration glut and that, in the interest of national unity, we need a time-out so those immigrants already here can be successfully assimilated into the American mainstream. He is referred to as an uninformed bumpkin and a dreaded protectionist for believing the interests of America and American workers should be the top priorities in trade negotiations with foreign countries. He is called a redneck fundamentalist for associating with a God who is accused of harboring a set of politically incorrect, holier-than-thou attitudes. Pat Buchanan sinned against liberal dogma. For this heresy, he became the target of a smear campaign conducted by experts. Although denied, essentially every instrument of communications and mindshaping in America is under the heavy influence or complete control of liberals. All of these are used to steer us into correct ways of thinking and, if necessary, to bludgeon us into conformity. Even situation comedies and soap operas shamelessly evangelize the creeds of liberal fundamentalism. Jerry Falwell should be given equal time. Let's face it. As far as many liberal intellectuals are concerned, the First Amendment right to free speech does not apply to talk they do not wish to hear. As a result, important truths, honest opinions and differing ideas are taboo. The massive campaign of indoctrination and intimidation has been largely successful. The voices of dissent are silent. Never before have so many Americans been afraid to say what they are thinking. This is classic censorship -- when individuals are indoctrinated to flagellate themselves, on cue, for the sin of ideological trespass. Pavlov's dogs were free agents by comparison. Make no mistake, that community of people who are constantly prattling about diversity, tolerance and inclusion will tie you to a rack in the middle of the town square and heap scorn and rebuke upon your head if you dare challenge one jot or one tittle of inerrant, liberal gospel. The overlords of our society, entrenched behind politically correct walls, cower at the sight and sound of an angry uprising of freedom fighters, led by a brave heart named Buchanan.
