To view one, simply click on the icon above the corresponding description. Whenever an overdose is mentioned, it refers to one that resulted in the death of an inmate. All population, urinalysis and unexplained death data is from the CJI Yearbook. To view the methodology of this study, see the sidebar in part 2 of On Dope Row. Chart 1: This is a list of how many fatal overdoses (total and per year) occured in each state. Chart 2: This shows how many unexplained deaths occurred in each prison. Unexplained deaths are categorized as overdoses by federal prisons, but not by private or state facilities. Chart 3: This contains several top 10 lists and other findings such as which states did not have the information Insight requested and which claimed to have no fatal overdoses in the last decade. (There is a mistake in the top 10 list of total fatal overdoses. Maryland and Missouri both had only 12 between 1990-2000). Chart 4: This lists the average rate of fatal overdoses for each state- prison system. Chart 5: This is the major list of the information sent to Insight by the state-prison systems. Chart 6 (see below): Ranking of states for rate and total overdoses. This shows which states had the hightest average rates of fatal overdoses and also shows which states had the highest total fatal overdoses.
