-Caveat Lector- BF>Lincoln is my favorite among the early figures of this country because he freed the slaves. No, he was no abolitionist. Abolitionists could not have been elected President. he was a politician. However, he was a great American because of what he ultimately did when the rubber hit the road. The bottom line was that he freed the slaves, while Garrison and Tappan were not in any position to do it. Earlier politicians were upholding freedom against England but still upheld slavery. Later politicians are "pro-choice", upholding equal rights but not for the unborn. Such hypocrisy I cannot stomach. I would rather have plain-spoken Lincoln than all the poetry coming from ineffectual people who cower when real principles are put to the test. Bates
