BF>The argument is that the phrase was added in the fifties as a result of the
McCarhtyist fear of atheistic Communism. Therefore it is not traditional.
However, the fear was of atheistic Communism. I think that this is interesting.
When the Soviet Union and South Africa were called evil empires, they collapsed.
When the language of "fanatical moral certainty" was applied to them, they
collapsed. China has never had such language applied to it. We still face the
threat of nuclear missiles from China. I think that there is a patten here.
Yes, the phrase "under God" is not a traditional part of the pledge of
allegiance. Right-wing people might be interested to know that the whole pledge
was written by...(ghasp)...a socialist. "In God We Trust" was added to our coin
about the same time, the fifties, if I am not mistaken. Alright, I concede.
Maybe politics should not be mixed with religion. It is possible that the point
can be made. However, there is the simple fact that whenever the language of
morality is applied, an argument is given great moral force. The religious and
the non-religious can both appreciate the nature of moral force. We can at least
agree on this.
The language "under God" has a meaning to a great many Americans. I believe
that it represents morality and justice to those of us who believe it. The moral
force of it, when applied agaisnt evil in the world, from Hitler to Bin Laden,
has gone a great distance in leading us to victory. I believe that if we are to
survive as a moral nation we need to honor God. It is this simple. If it is
unAmerican to force religion down the throats of the unwilling, and it certainly
is, then at least remember that Dr. Pepper is a private company. I would rather
they keep the pledge the way it has come to be accepted. Personally, I cannot
stand Dr. Pepper. What do they say? No publicity is bad publicity?
