Afghanistan charges Pak intelligence with helping Osama PTI New York, February 13 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Afghanistan has charged elements in Pakistan's intelligence services with helping Osama bin Laden and Mullah Mohammad Omar evade capture. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf needs to act in a more firm way to filter all the elements in the intelligence services supporting the terrorists, Afghanistan interim interior minister Yunus Qanooni said in an interview with Arabic language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat. The New York Times, which quoted the interview, said the charges were the most direct expression of deep suspicions among Afghanistan's current leaders that old ties between Pakistan and Taliban government had not been entirely broken. On a visit to Islamabad, the paper noted, Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karazai had tried to end the bitterness. With Musharraf, he had said distrust between Pakistan and those who now form Afghanistan's leadership should soon be eclipsed by trust and partnership. But Qanooni's remarks seemed intended almost as a rebuttal of such assurances, the Time said. Qanooni said some former Taliban officials and fighters were "trying to regroup in Pakistan in a new formation." The former officials and fighters, he said, "have relations with Pakistani intelligence that still insists on interfering in the Afghani affairs and that is not in the interest of the relations between the two countries." But in interviews, speaking with The Times on condition of anonymity, senior Pakistani officials vehemently denied continuing support of the Taliban or their remnants. *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
