Canadians Skaters Get Gold, Russians Furious

February 15, 2002 03:42 PM ET

By John Mehaffey

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Canadian figure skaters Jamie Sale and David
Pelletier were awarded a pairs gold medal Friday after the International
Olympic Committee moved swiftly to defuse a judging scandal overshadowing the
Winter Games.

IOC president Jacques Rogge told a news conference the Canadian duo would be
given the second gold of the event following a decision by the International
Skating Union to suspend a French judge in Monday's final.

ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta said Marie-Reine Le Gougne, who had voted for
the Russian winners Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze in the 5-4 split
decision, had been suspended for misconduct. The Russians will retain their
gold medal.

It is only the third time in the history of the modern Summer and Winter
Olympics that a result has been overturned for something other than doping.

The Canadians reacted with relief, Russia with outrage.

"We are happy justice has been done," Pelletier told a news conference. "It
does not take anything away from Yelena and Anton. This was not something
against them. It was something against the system."

RUSSIAN FURY

Russian Olympic Committee official Rudolf Nezvegsky told Reuters Rogge had
given a clear signal that competition could be determined in the courtrooms,
not the sports arena.

"By doing this, they just struck a huge blow not only to the Olympic spirit
of fair competition, but also to the whole nature of sport," he said.

Back in the competition arenas, there was some solace for Russia when Olga
Danilova won her country's first cross-country skiing gold medal of the Games
in the combined pursuit.

Danilova outpaced team mate Larisa Lazutina in the five km classical race by
only 0.2 of a second to set up an exciting battle with the five times Olympic
champion in the 10 km freestyle leg.

She was happy to shadow her team mate for the first half of the race and made
the decisive break after 3.7 kms before opening up a gap on the final
downhill.

Danilova added the gold to the silver medal she won in the women's 10 km
classical and her two golds from Nagano, while Lazutina has now won two
silvers at these Games.

In the luge, Germans Patric-Fritz Leitner and Alexander Resch, the overall
World Cup champions, dashed the host nation's title hopes with victory over
Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin.

At Park City, Isabelle Blanc won an all-French final over favorite Karine
Ruby in the debut Olympic parallel giant slalom snowboarding event,

Ruby, the 1998 giant slalom champion, left herself too much to do after
finishing 1.8 seconds behind in the first run.
