Film links Pope to conspiracy murder

THE Vatican is reported to be furious over a new Italian film which suggests that four
years after the election of the Pope the Holy See was at the centre of a conspiracy
involving drug-running mafiosi, corrupt bankers and politicians, arms traders,
Freemasons and spies.
God�s Bankers, directed by Giuseppe Ferrara, also suggests that the Polish-born
Pope used Mafia-linked funds to undermine communism in Poland and Eastern
Europe.
The film, on release next week, deals with the mysterious death of Roberto Calvi, the
Mafia-linked banker with close Vatican connections who was found hanged beneath
Blackfriars Bridge in June 1982. The film reopens the case by dismissing the suicide
verdict reached by a London coroner�s court at the time. It concludes that Calvi
(played by Omero Antonutti) was murdered by Mafia figures with ties to the Vatican
and Italian and British Freemasons.
The bank which Calvi headed, the Banco Ambrosiano, crashed in 1982 with massive
debts to front companies in Latin America controlled by the Vatican Bank, the
Institute for Religious Works (IOR), headed by Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, an
American of Lithuanian origin. According to God�s Bankers, Marcinkus, played in the
film by Rutger Hauer, best known for his role in Ridley Scott�s Blade Runner,
doublecrossed Calvi by reneging on a guarantee that the debts would be covered to
allow Calvi time to rebuild Banco Ambrosiano finances.
Calvi also owed Mafia-linked financiers huge sums, and, according to Signor Ferrara,
knew too much about links between the Vatican, the Mafia and an illegal Masonic
lodge known as P2, which (as emerged in later trials) amounted to a shadowy state
within a state involving politicians, financiers and military and secret service
officers.
The film is based on judicial investigations and the testimony of Calvi�s son Carlo,
who believes his father was a naive victim rather than a criminal.
It shows Calvi being lured to a cheap hotel in London, chloroformed on the Thames
embankment by men with Sicilian and Neapolitan accents and hung by a noose from
under the bridge (reconstructed for the film on the Danube) with bricks stuffed in his
jacket pockets and down his trousers.
Signor Ferrara, who said he had been trying to make the film for 14 years but had
been repeatedly obstructed, said it was inconceivable that, at the age of 62, Calvi
could have �shinned up the scaffolding like a monkey with bricks in his pocket�.
Staff at Avvenire, the Catholic daily, said Signor Ferrara had caused deep offence
not only by portraying Archbishop Marcinkus as a foul- mouthed, double-dealing
cynic with an obsession with golf and an eye for pretty girls (�my nieces�) but also by
suggesting that the Pope was involved in the details of Vatican Bank finances and
the seamier side of the Calvi affair.
Forensic experts are expected to issue a new report on Calvi�s death next month
after exhumation of his body last year at the request of magistrates, with the
permission of Carlo Calvi. Two leading Mafia figures, Flavio Carboni and Pippo Calo,
who feature in the film, are under arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Calvi.
