Two Federal Air Marshals say an American Airlines employee told them
that the airline "was growing tired of air marshals taking high-revenue
seats" and refused to allow them to sit near the cockpit during a flight
late last month, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.

In addition, another airline employee identified the marshals, who are
supposed to travel anonymously, by saying in front of passengers, "These
air marshals have been a nuisance all week," the marshals say in a
report written after Flight 1718 of Feb. 20 >>

It may be that the air marshals are confused as to what their job is anyway.
Why would the air marshals want to sit near the cockpit? The pilots are not
a problem. From that seat, the air marshals might be very comfortable and be
able to share in the first class goodies, but they have no way of watching
the passengers. They should be sitting in the last row, possibly in seats
raised especially to allow them to view all the people with little effort.
If we're going to pay for the hire of air marshals, it would be nice to think
of them as actually guarding the planes, not hanging out next to the cockpit.
