-Caveat Lector- Church sex scandal spurs call to change law - A bill would end the statute of limitations on child-sex abuse. By Nancy Phillips Inquirer Staff Writer 3/7/02 "Amid revelations of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Philadelphia and elsewhere, one Pennsylvania legislator is proposing to change state law to make such cases easier to prosecute - even if the accuser comes forward many years later. State Sen. Lisa Boscola (D., Northampton) said yesterday that she would introduce legislation next week that would remove the statute of limitations for filing criminal charges for sexual abuse of minors. Under current law, such cases must be brought within five years after the victim turns 18. Her staff is also researching whether state law could be changed on another front: to extend the time frame in which someone can bring a lawsuit claiming past sexual abuse. Current law says such suits generally must be brought by the time the accuser reaches age 20." http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/2809847.htm

So much money, in fact, that it will challenge whatever reality you thought you had about the over-world of banking, finance and economics. It is also about the nether world of international banking and finance, a world that is said not to exist in reality. But exist it does. More often than not, this never-never-land of international banking is concealed from public view by the judicious use of two sets of books. It is also eclipsed from interested investigators by a never-ending series of real frauds that result in arrest and imprisonment of numerous scam artists. This creates the clever illusion that the only thing going on are artful scams designed to fleece the unwary. Such swindles fall under the general category of High Yield Investment Programs, Front End Fee frauds and Prime Bank Note schemes. Numerous law enforcement cases such as these, when twinned with dire "beware" warnings published on FBI, US Treasury and other websites, easily lead one to conclude that there are no such things as "real" trading programs. And the powers that be don't at all object to this conclusion being reached. It is the old case of hiding trees in a forest. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/07/business/07ENRO.html?todaysheadlines March 7, 2002 Army Official Kept Options on Enron Stock Until January By ALEX BERENSON Thomas E. White, a former top executive of the Enron Corporation (news/quote), promised to give up any financial interest in Enron when he became secretary of the Army, but held options to buy 665,000 shares until early this year. After he became secretary in May last year, Mr. White provided only fragmentary disclosures about his stock options to Army ethics officials, according to letters released yesterday by the Senate Armed Services Committee. He sought and received an extension to dispose of his stock. But even after he sold 380,000 Enron shares for more than $10 million, he continued to hold the options, without the approval of ethics officials, the letters show. http://commondreams.org/views02/0308-01.htm Published in the March 25, 2002 issue of The Nation Kucinich Rocks the Boat by John Nichols Dennis Kucinich never doubted that millions of Americans had deep concerns about George W. Bush's ever-expanding war on ill-defined foes abroad and on civil liberties at home. But the Congressional Progressive Caucus chair admits he underestimated the depth of the discomfort until February 17, when he delivered a speech to the Southern California Americans for Democratic Action, in which he declared, "Let us pray that our country will stop this war." Recalling the Congressional vote authorizing the President's response to the September 11 terrorist attacks--a resolution supported by Kucinich and all but one member of Congress, California Democrat Barbara Lee--the Ohioan thundered, "We did not authorize an eye for an eye. Nor did we ask that the blood of innocent people, who perished on September 11, be avenged with the blood of innocent villagers in Afghanistan. We did not authorize the Administration to wage war anytime, anywhere, anyhow it pleases. We did not authorize war without end. We did not authorize a permanent war economy. Yet we are upon the threshold of a permanent war economy." http://www.msnbc.com/modules/exports/ct_email.asp?/news/720997.asp Enron vastly understated lobbying Corrected report: $2.5 million in first six months of 2001 ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON, March 7 — Enron Corp. belatedly disclosed that it spent nearly $2.5 million lobbying the Bush administration and Congress in the first six months of last year. That was three times more than the energy trader originally acknowledged, and even the corrected figure may be wrong. The corrected report reveals far more lobbying of the Bush White House than Enron acknowledged in the earlier report. THE DISCLOSURE CAME in a report filed with the House and Senate. Because the report may still be inaccurate, nobody from the company would step forward to sign it. "Unfortunately, virtually all the Enron employees who worked in the Washington, D.C., office are no longer with the company," and "there is no current employee who has personal knowledge of much of the activity," a lawyer representing Enron wrote the House and Senate. The corrected report reveals far more lobbying of the Bush White House than Enron acknowledged in the earlier report. There are eight references to the White House in the amended report, which was filed March 2; just two in the incorrect version, filed last summer. <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
