Philadelphia case set a high bar in sex-abuse suits - By Nancy Phillips -
Inquirer Staff Writer 3/17/02 "Under Pennsylvania law, the court emphasized,
victims of childhood sexual abuse generally have until age 20 to sue their
abusers. That is one of the most restrictive time limits in the nation, legal
experts say. In New Jersey, suits can be filed at any age as long as a person
can demonstrate injury stemming from the abuse. In recent weeks, lawmakers in
Harrisburg have moved to make the Pennsylvania law less restrictive.
Legislation that would extend the statute of limitations on civil suits in
such cases is pending in the state Senate, and one lawmaker from the area is
preparing a bill that would eliminate it altogether. The push to amend the
law comes at a time when the Philadelphia Archdiocese has acknowledged that
it has "credible evidence" that 35 diocesan priests had sexually abused 50
children over the last five decades. Those figures do not include sex abuse
by priests who work for religious orders, such as the Franciscan Friars, the
order to which the alleged abuser belonged."

Priest abuse cases slow to settle in R.I. Talks with church began a decade
ago By Matt Carroll, Globe Staff, 3/16/02 "Providence - While the
Archdiocese of Boston this week agreed to pay up to $30 million to settle 84
lawsuits and end a sordid chapter in the local church's history, Catholic
officials in Providence have taken a far different course. In Rhode Island,
38 victims of sexual abuse have waited so long for their lawsuits to be
resolved that four of the 11 priests accused of molesting them have died. For
10 years now, according to lawyers for the 38 plaintiffs, legal foot-dragging
by the Diocese of Providence in a state that is overwhelmingly Catholic has
kept the consolidated lawsuits against the 11 priests and one nun at a near
standstill."

JOHN WALKER LINDH FEARED LEAVING TALIBAN
Lindh Feared Leaving Taliban, Defense Says
More Government Evidence Sought
By Brooke A. Masters
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 16, 2002; Page A15

John Walker Lindh wanted to quit fighting with the Taliban after he learned
of the Sept. 11 terrorist hijackings but was afraid he would be killed,
attorneys for the California man asserted yesterday as they asked the
government to turn over evidence that might bolster their defense.
Specifically, Lindh's attorneys asked for information about possible
torture by Northern Alliance leaders, photographs of Lindh in custody that
might support his assertion he was mistreated, and access to the al Qaeda
and Taliban prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay. They are also looking
for internal U.S. government documents about terrorist groups and training
camps.
