POWELL'S FAILURE WAS DOOMED -
NOW MID-EAST CRISIS HEADS FOR ALL-OUT WAR

Both the PLO and Israel are poised to resume killing. That is the one certainty from
the failure of Colin Powell to broker a peace deal.
Israeli intelligence sources have told Globe-Intel that they now expect:
* A resumption of suicide bombers attacking any target of opportunity. Despite all the
killing and rounding up of suspects, there is a fear that there are at least 30 bombers
- many of them women, some little more than children - ready to strike.
* Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon will order a new assault - this time focused on
Gaza City.
* The siege of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem will become more intensified.
Already the town itself has been severely damaged in the fighting.
* Prime Minister Sharon may finally decide that he will authorize a snatch squad to go
in and capture Arafat - or even have him killed.
These initial predictions came from senior officers in the Israeli kirya, its
military
headquarters in Tel Aviv.
The one dissenting voice is that of Mossad chief, Efraim Halevy. He has indicated
that further bloodshed by Israel would force him to resign.
But swept along by his military commanders and hawkish Defense Minister, Sharon
is unlikely to pay attention to his most senior intelligence officer.
Mossad sources say that Sharon is now on the point of authorizing his army
commanders in Bethlehem to pump nausea-inducing gas into Arafat's compound
and the Church of the Nativity.
Hours after the collapse of Powell's "mission impossible" Pope John Paul called the
Church's senior prelate, Father Ibrahim Faltas, in what the Vatican called "a further
attempt to raise morale among the clergy."
It was the Pontiff's second call this week.
There are conflicting reports about whether the clergy are being forced by PLO
fighters occupying the Church to remain there - or are doing so voluntarily.
There are fifty priests in the Church, along with some 200 others, many of whom are
members of the PLO. The Church has now been under siege for 15 days.
Meantime both sides have launched a huge propaganda campaign to blame Powell's
failure on his inability to understand "the reality of the situation." The words are
those
of an Israeli spokesman. They echo what Yasser Arafat's spokesman has said.
On past evidence the PLO will win the propaganda war at least in Europe.
But Sharon is not interested in that victory. He is determined to put an end to the
terrorism that threatens not only his own people - but his own political future.
For Arafat, the only weapon he has - apart from propaganda skills - is to ensure that
he can drum up Arab support in Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Iran.
The signs were as night fell over unholy Holy Land that the real darkness will take
longer to lift than tomorrow's dawn.
