Sabo, 81, Judge in Murder Trials, Dies May 12, 2002 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA, May 10 - Judge Albert F. Sabo, who presided over the 1982 trial in which Mumia Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death for killing a policeman, died on Wednesday. He was 81 and lived in Philadelphia. The cause was heart failure. Judge Sabo, of Common Pleas Court, held the record for death sentences handed down by a Pennsylvania judge. After a chaotic trial, Mr. Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia police officer, Daniel Faulkner. In later years, Mr. Abu-Jamal's writings on the justice system gained him a worldwide following of celebrities, foreign politicians and death penalty opponents. His death sentence was overturned last December when a federal judge found errors in the sentencing phase of the trial. For 15 years, Judge Sabo was one of a dozen Philadelphia judges who heard only homicide cases. Among them was the 1988 trial of the Philadelphia mob boss Nicodemo Scarfo, who was acquitted. Judge Sabo presided over 31 cases that resulted in the death penalty, the most in the state, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported in 1992. He spent 16 years as a Philadelphia undersheriff before being named a judge in January 1974. He also practiced law privately. He retired from the bench in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Mark and Gregory; and a granddaughter. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/12/obituaries/12SABO.html?ex=1022208106&ei=1&en=b17bd5d1969f2024 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyright 2002 The New York Times Company www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
