150 detained in crackdown on prostitution in Mashhad

TEHRAN, May 20 (AFP) - About 150 people including
44 women have been arrested in holy city of Mashhad, in the biggest crackdown on
vice since the 1979 Islamic revolution, IRNA reported Monday.
A total of 148 people, members of 11 prostitution rings, "were identified and
arrested", IRNA said, quoting police commander in Mashhad Javad Ekbia.
Those arrested in the police raids, included "44 runaway women aged from 15 to 30
years with criminal antecedents, including anti-Islamic behavior".
Eight brothels were "discovered and closed and a number of mobile phones, cars,
motorcycles, pornographic films as well as alcoholic beverages" were seized, he
added.
Mashhad, Iran's second largest city with five million residents is the country's only
city
where a Shiite Imam is buried.
Prostitution was a thriving industry under the former shah but banned after the 1979
Islamic revolution.
However it has been making a comeback amid rising unemployment and economic
problems, but many officials accuse "foreign enemies" of being behind it.
"The enemies are trying to spread corruption here to deal a blow to our country",
press reports quoted Iranian police commander Mohammad-Bagher Galibaf as
saying Monday.
The police "are ready to pick up all street women and prostitutes in less than 72
hours across the country", he added.

Tehran justice chief Abbasali Alizadeh said last week "the United States and Israel
have invested a great deal to spread Western culture and corruption among our
youth (and) to destroy Islam and our revolution".
On April 17 Said Hanai was hanged after being convicted of murdering 16 prostitutes
in Mashhad in 2000 and 2001 was hanged.

Five drug smugglers hanged in Iran

TEHRAN, May 20 (AFP) - Five drug smugglers were
hanged early Monday in a prison in Iran's holy Shiite Muslim city of Mashhad, the
Keyhan afternoon paper reported.
"The smugglers had been arrested early this month in clashes with police which left
seven traffickers dead, as they were carrying a 500-kilo morphine convoy from the
northeastern Khorasan province," the paper said.
The were sentenced to death by the Islamic revolutionary court in Mashhad.
Iran's "eye for an eye" law, in force since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, stipulates
capital punishment for rape, stealing weapons, drug trafficking and murder, but
provides for sentences to be commuted to a jail term if the family of the victim offers
a pardon.
