-Caveat Lector- I heard this interview and fully support my governor for his stand on this. It is no different than being required to say The Lord's Prayer. The issue is government telling me I am required to do or say something and has nothing to do with being a loyal U.S. citizen.
As a native-born U.S. citizen I don't need to affirm allegiance to my country, it is there naturally. I was not required to learn or recite the pledge to become a citizen; I was born one. Even when joining the U.S. Army I was not required to recite or memorize the pledge. Rather an oath of loyalty was recited one time and not memorized or repeated. I am more inclined to require naturalized citizens to reaffirm their allegiance, but that is about as meaningful as requiring celibacy of Catholic clergy. The mouthing of something does not equal the deed. This was Governor Ventura's point; only by your actions are you a loyal citizen, not by saying so. > > From http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/3309432.htm > > }}}>Begin > Posted on Tue, May. 21, 2002 > Ventura compares requiring Pledge to Nazi, Taliban oaths > > BY Jim Ragsdale > Pioneer Press > Gov.
