Youth stage a rave dance against Israeli occupation

TEL AVIV: Israeli youth, known for tuning out politics and tuning in loud music
instead, made a statement with their feet at a dance party called to protest Israel's
continued presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. At the rave party in downtown
Tel Aviv Thursday, the theme was urging Israel to get out of the land the Palestinians
claim as their own. Israel captured the territories in the 1967 Mideast war, and
Palestinians want them for a state.

For the last 20 months, the two sides have been locked in bloody violence. The
unusual event, held in a public square in the center of the seaside city, drew a mix of
about 1,000 youth more at home at underground parties or in trendy cafes than at
political demonstrations. There were hardened partygoers with dredlocks and
multiple facial piercing and a younger set with punk hair cuts dyed purple, pink and
luminous green. Some came on skateboards, roller blades and even on stilts.
Organized by a group of twenty-somethings involved in the arts, the event had no
affiliation to any traditional political group.

"We think the old ways of protest, the usual marches don't mean anything to young
people," said one of the organizers, Shai Rapaport, 28. The clean-cut Web page
designer said the event was aimed at a section of Israeli youth written off by society
for being escapist or part of the "espresso generation" -- partying and keeping
politics
at arm's length.

"We are trying to make a link between the life they are living and what they are
escaping. Some people said don't bring politics to parties but a rave can have a lot of
power -- people come together and feel love and unity but it also expresses some
kind of rage."

Held under the banner of "Get out of the territories so we can get out of our houses,"
the event grew out of a sense of desperation and helplessness. Many Israelis avoid
coffee shops and nightspots for fear that crowds may attract suicide bombers.

Just after the party ended, a terrorist tried to blow up a night club in another part
of
Tel Aviv, but a security guard shot and killed the attacker first. Many felt that
getting
out of the West Bank and Gaza would end the terrorism. "Leaving the territories
means we can leave our homes without fear. It means life can go on as usual," said
Orr Gilat, 25 a waiter who wants to make films. "For the first time in my life I am
really
worried about the situation here," said film student Elian Lazovsky, 27.

"I don't see any solution and a new government won't have the answer. I try to be
optimistic, I just don't know what to hang on to. I just hope not to die and to be able
live my own small life," she said.
