Anger as Israel demolishes Gaza factories

GAZA (Reuters) - The Israeli army has demolished a Palestinian industrial complex
that it said had been a launching point for militant attacks but local Palestinians
said
it was just another instance of punitive Israeli action.
"I hate them," eight-year-old Hassan Kurdeya said of the Israelis on Monday as he
watched a bulldozer raze his family's woodworking foundry at the complex near
Gaza city.
"They do not like to leave us alone, they kill people and demolish homes and
factories."
Israel had closed off the area last year, amid a Palestinian uprising for
independence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
Also destroyed was the Gaza Strip's sole factory for producing bottled oxygen,
according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Palestinian medical officials told Reuters that work had continued there despite the
closure order, and in coordination with Israel, but Israeli military sources denied
this.
They said the entire complex was "abandoned" and said Palestinian gunmen had
used it to snipe at army patrols on a nearby road to a major Jewish settlement.
"On the 17th of May there was a shooting attack on the...road and four soldiers were
wounded. Due to the large number of attacks there and the planting of roadside
bombs, the Israeli army began (the demolitions)," a military source said.
Palestinian witnesses saw smoke spiralling up from the complex site, amid the arid
dunes of the coastal strip.
Kurdeya's father, Samir, said his $2 million (1.25 million pounds) foundry used to
have more than 75 employees, until Israel declared the area off-limits to
Palestinians last year.
Israel has regularly destroyed Palestinian infrastructure since the Palestinian
uprising erupted in September 2000 after peace talks deadlocked.
Human rights groups say Israeli troops have also destroyed dozens of houses and
hundreds of acres of orchards near the demolished complex.
"We used to cut trees and turn them into a fine furniture. We loved our job but we
do it no more," said Kudeya, 41, adding that he had not been notified in advance of
the demolition plan.
The Palestinian Authority had repeatedly accused Israel of crippling its economy by
continuing assaults and demolitions against institutions and factories.
