Far right denies Iraq is financing a 'Haider list' By Michael Leidig and Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in Vienna and Brussels August 1 2002 Europe's leading far-right parties have held secret talks at the mountain retreat of the Austrian populist politician Joerg Haider to forge a pan-European movement. The gathering at Mr Haider's power-base in Carinthia, described as a "private event", included the two leaders of Belgium's Vlaams Blok, Filip de Winter and Frank Vanhecke, and Mario Borghesia, a former Euro-MP for Italy's Northern League. The talks centred on proposals for a far-right list for the European Parliament elections in July 2004, copying tactics adopted by left-wing parties. The meeting went so well that the group plans fresh strategy sessions, with a summit in Belgium in December to work on a joint manifesto. Mr Haider said the "meeting of friends" was a private matter. "We discussed the future co-ordination of the parties' programs. We have only been doing what those on the left have done for a long time," he said. Mr Vanhecke, Vlaams Blok's chairman, said all three parties were hostile to Brussels but had to prepare lists covering the European Union because of new "federalist" plans for cross-border party funding and campaigning. "None of us likes this bureaucratic monster state, but we have to compete like everybody else," he said. The Carinthian meeting brought widespread protests from the Austrian left. Andrea Kuntzl, the Social Democrats' party manager, called it a "scandal", saying Mr Haider was helping right-wing extremists to spread their "brown poison" throughout Europe, an allusion to Hitler's Brownshirts. Johannes Voggenhuber, a Green Euro-MP, said Mr Haider was emerging as the "unofficial head" of the pariah club and posed a threat to Europe's democratic order. "With the creation of a unified far-right we are heading towards a climate of anti-democracy within Europe," he said. "Haider has a clear political agenda and will be urging other far-right parties to form ruling coalitions with conservative parties, as has happened in Austria." Shortly before the gathering, Mr Haider visited President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, leading to claims that Baghdad has been financing the creation of a "Haider list" as a way of destabilising Europe. "The question of financial aid from Iraq is still wide open," Mr Voggenhuber said. But claims that Saddam might finance a new grouping were dismissed as preposterous by Vlaams Blok. "We believe in the Western alliance and we would show total solidarity with US and British forces if they needed to attack Iraq," Mr Vanhecke said.
