"The US Secret Service violated the personal freedom of certain members of my delegation by trying to recruit them to betray their homeland," Sabri told the Al-Raifdain weekly newspaper. Sabri and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan met at UN headquarters in May, the second round of talks between the United Nations and Iraq since dialogue resumed at the beginning of the year. Sabri accused the US of having violated the status of the UN by delaying visas for the technical delegation accompanying him an d by trying to corrupt team members in a "crude and tactless way." "The security services at the airport (on arrival) also searched us deliberately to provoke us," Sabri said. "All that led us to ask Kofi Annan not to hold the last session of talks in New York," he said. A third meeting between Annan and Sabri took place in July in Vienna, but the two-day talks also did not yield an agreement on a return of weapons inspectors, evacuated from Baghdad in December 1998 on the eve of US-British strikes.
