AMERICA TURNING AGAINST WAR

Aug 24 2002

From Richard Wallace, US Editor, In New York

PRESIDENT Bush was last night facing increasing hostility from the American public over plans for a full-scale military attack on Iraq.

A new poll shows that support for an invasion has plunged amid worldwide concerns over US forces launching an unprovoked assault.

There were angry scenes yesterday as protesters took to the streets on a presidential trip to Portland, Oregon.

More than 1,500 fought riot police in a noisy demo near Mr Bush's hotel, chanting "Drop Bush, Not Bombs".

The Gallup survey showed Mr Bush's personal approval rating has fallen to its lowest level since before September 11, partly due to the state of the US economy.

Only a slight majority of Americans - 53 per cent - support sending in troops, down from 74 per cent in November.

Those who support a war insist America's allies must be involved in any action.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's comments that the priority is getting weapons inspectors back into Iraq - rather than ousting Saddam - is seen as a clear signal that even Mr Bush's staunchest ally is having second thoughts. The Russians say any attack is "unacceptable" and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has reiterated his opposition.

In another blow against the War on Terror, it was revealed that the Justice Department and FBI supplied erroneous information in more than 75 applications for search warrants and wiretaps. American warplanes yesterday attacked a missile guidance radar in northern Iraq after it targeted US and British jets policing the no-fly zone.

WHO BACKS AN ATTACK?

FOR

Israel: Postponing "would enable Saddam to accelerate his weapons programme"

Australia: "Only a fool would support a policy of appeasement"

AGAINST

Russia: "Unacceptable"

Germany: Won't take part in US "adventure".

France: "I do not want to imagine an attack against Iraq," President Chirac

Egypt: "a catastrophe"

Bahrain: Against "any unilateral action"

Turkey: Attack will "lead to chaos in the region," PM Bulent Ecevit

Saudi Arabia: Diplomacy "should be given a chance," Crown Prince Abdullah

Jordan: "Somewhat ludicrous," King Abdullah

Malaysia: Attack "would provoke a great hatred," PM Mahathir Mohamad

Spain: War is "not the best of solutions," Dep. PM Mariano Rajoy
