NATO Peacekeepers Fight Two-Hour Battle With Gunmen in
Kosovo

2002-08-29 23:41 (New York)

     Pristina, Yugoslavia, Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- NATO-led
peacekeepers fought a two-hour battle with gunmen in Yugoslavia's
ethnic Albanian dominated province of Kosovo, the British
Broadcasting Corp. and Agence France-Presse said.

The incident began when gunmen fired on ethnic Serb farmers
and UN police officers yesterday at Gorazdevac, a village 90
kilometers (50 miles) west of the provincial capital, Pristina,
the BBC cited Andrea Angeli, a spokesman for the United Nations
mission in Kosovo, as saying.

Italian troops with the peacekeeping force, known as KFOR,
came under fire as they approached the village. The shooting
lasted for two hours before the gunmen fled when KFOR special
units arrived backed by a helicopter, Angeli said.

Kosovo has been administered by the UN since June 1999, after
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization waged a 78-day bombing
campaign to end a Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanians. Tensions
have risen since UN police earlier this month arrested members of
the ethnic Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army, a guerrilla group that
fought in the 1998-1999 Kosovo conflict.

Troops arrested an ethnic Albanian man after the incident at
Gorazdevac, Angeli told AFP. There weren't any casualties in the
gun battle, he said.

The UN has recently increased its efforts to repatriate
members of the ethnic Serb minority in Kosovo, the BBC said. More
than 200,000 ethnic Serbs fled the province after the conflict. An
estimated 90,000 remain in Kosovo in enclaves policed by KFOR
troops, AFP said.
