Israel and the US Not One and the Same

(PC) - Here is something worth repeating: Israel is a foreign country. Israel is not an extension of the United States, not a state or a province: Israel is a foreign sovereign power, with its own military, its own intelligence services, its own economy, its own priorities and its own interests.

To be sure, Israel owes a great deal to this country -- not only financially and militarily, but politically as well. Israel receives billions of dollars annually from the United States, both in economic and military aid, and enjoys the all mighty US veto at the United Nations Security Council (almost always the lone veto). But all the same, Israel is a foreign country, and this trivial fact needs to be repeated.

This basic fact is worth repeating because for all intents and purposes, Israel is rarely looked upon, either by our government or by the American public, as a foreign entity. Often, we are led to believe that the interests of Israel are one and the same with the interests of the United States, that what is good for Israel is good for the United States, and vice versa. The latest illustration of this proposition is the intense lobbying that is taking place now by the Israeli government over the war against Iraq: Israel very badly wants the United States to attack Iraq and is egging on the hawks within the Bush Administration to launch a "pre-emptive attack" – not that the Rumsfelds and the Wolfowitzs of the Bush administration need any prodding.

But what is also worth noting is that while the United States seems to believe that Israel is an extension of itself, Israel on the other hand is very clear-eyed about the nature of its relationship with its benefactor. Israel keeps its own interests well in focus and never confuses them with those of the United States. This fact was vividly illustrated after September 11, when Ariel Sharon flatly rebuffed president Bush's plea for Israel to calm things down and start talking to Yasser Arafat, so that the President can build his anti-terror coalition. "This is not the time to talk to Arafat," Mr. Sharon's response came on September 16, 2001, not more than a week after September 11. While even the Iranians had pledged cooperation, Israel had no problems saying "no".

Another example of how Israel does not confuse its interests with those of the United States, is the slap on the face that president Bush received (and seems to have nicely absorbed) when Ariel Sharon again said "no" back in March of this year to the demand that Israel withdraw from Palestinian territory re-invaded during Operation Defensive Shield. Mr. Sharon said that he would think about it, and then went ahead and did what he thought was right for his own agenda, even after president Bush kept demanding, then asking, then suggesting, that Mr. Sharon withdraw.

Other examples illustrating the fact that Israel has its own priorities and does not confuse them with those of the United States abound. Remember Jonathan Jay Pollard, the American recruited to spy for Israel and caught red-handed outside the Israeli embassy back in 1985? U.S. officials called the operation but "one link in an organized and well-financed Israeli espionage ring operating within the United States.” Attorney Joseph diGenova said back in 1998: “Pollard ranks among the four most serious cases of national security damage in the history of this country… Nothing matches what he did in terms of the compromise of the technical intelligence capability of this country and he put at risk human lives.”

Another shocking example that illustrates that Israel has always kept a clear-headed view of its own interests, even at the expense not only of American interests, but of the very lives of American soldiers, is the attack by Israel in 1967, on international waters, on the USS Liberty near Gaza. The attack resulted in the death of 34 sailors and the wounding of 172. To this day Israel claims that the attack was a mistake, but not one member of the surviving USS Liberty crew, or anyone who has studied what happened, believes that there is even a remote chance that the attack was mistaken. They are convinced that the only viable conclusion is that Israel, in single-minded pursuit of its interests, deliberately attacked the Liberty and meant to sink it.

And so now Ariel Sharon wants us to invade Iraq so that he can, in the mayhem of war and given “the new realities on the ground,” implement his “final solution”: transferring as many Palestinians out of the West Bank and Gaza and into other Arab countries. Far fetched? Not really, considering that even the Majority Leader of the US Congress went on the record on May 1st of this year, saying the following: “There are many Arab nations that have many hundreds of thousands of acres of land and--and soil and property and opportunity to create a Palestinian state.”

The interests of Israel are not one and the same with the interests of the United States. Israel is a foreign country. President Bush likes to keep his reality simple. You can’t get simpler than that.
