S. D. Candidate arrested for forum question The LP candidate for governor in South Dakota has been arrested for interrupting a candidate forum to protest the organizer's decision to bar Libertarians from participating. At a forum at the Huron State Fair on August 3, Nathan Barton was forcibly removed from the fairgrounds by security after shouting, "Where is Terry Begay?" Begay is the LP candidate for U. S. House. Barton, 47, was taken to Beadle County jail, where he was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing a law enforcement officer. He was released on a $400 bond. Barton said he spoke up at the forum because only Democratic and Republican candidates for U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and governor had been invited to participate - even though Libertarian candidates will also be on the November 5 ballot. "There are three candidates on the ballot for U.S. House," he told the crowd. "Where is the third candidate?" Barton was removed from the fairgrounds, and warned that he would be arrested if he tried to re-enter. Barton refused to obey, stating that he had a right to exercise free speech on public property. He was promptly handcuffed and taken away. Ironically, the debates were being held at the so-called "Freedom Stage." The forum was sponsored by the Dakota News Network.
