Excerpts from the book : Page xii ""... Consider the instances of the things a person under hypnosis is told to do when he hears a certain word or sees a certain event. When he comes out of the trance, he has no recall of what he was told. When he hears the particular key word or sees the key event, he reacts as he was told, provided it does not conflict with his basic concept of right and wrong. If it does conflict, he will resist but at the same time remember what he was told to do." Page xv "During the next two days we learned about the use of drugs to enhance recall and simplify the task of misfiling information in a person's brain. We learned the nature of some new experiments being conducted in the area of moving memories around within the brain through the use of some exotic new drugs. At the conclusion of the briefings, we were encouraged to consider possible applications with military and other missions." page 66 "...Technical Services Division. The team was responsible for evaluating interrogation techniques that incorporated the use of various drugs and types of hypnosis. These research projects were highly classified and funded through a super secret project referred to within the Agency by the codeword MKULTRA (pronounced MK-Ultra) Most of the test subjects for these experiments were volunteers from prisons or mental hospitals." page 122 "An umbrella project with the code name of MKULTRA was created. Beneath this umbrella many sub-projects were started. Each had its own unique code name. The CIA was given the overall responsibility for the funding and logistical support of MKULTRA. The sub-projects were distributed within and tailored to fit unique requirements in the intelligence sections of HEW, DOD, State Department, NSA and the CIA." page 123 "MKULTRA, A Codeword project started in the 1950 s to study interrogation techniques and the use of drugs as tools in the techniques. At that time MK was frequently used as a prefix if there was a military application. ULTRA was the codeword used by British Intelligence for their WWII super secret project which was able to decode German cryptographic messages. Perhaps the originator of this codeword con-sidered that the work being done with mind control was also that super secret." page 125 "Another well publicized experiment gone wrong occurred in 1963. Linda McDonald checked into the Allen Memorial Institute of McGill University in Montreal, for treatment of depression following the birth of her fifth child. She was not aware that her attending physician, Dr. D. Ewan Cameron was actually doing research for one of the sub-projects under the control of the Canadian Health and Welfare Department and funded by the CIA under MKULTRA. Multiple electroshock treatments and 86 days of drug induced sleep caused her to lose all ability to recall any of her first 26 years of life. Nine patients involved in the Canadian experiments, which included the use of LSD, have since collected $100,000.00 each from the CIA." page 150 "In the fall of 1959 the CIA shuffled people around, hired an assortment of researchers in the field of mind control, and finalized a long range plan for expanding its mind control technology....office was to coordinate with Covert Operations to find a mission which would be ideal for testing a programmed Agent....idea of using Gene Stone as the first subject remained unquestioned. This was now near the end of the Eisenhower administration, and despite a number of blunders, the CIA was riding a high in prestige and funding. All involved in planning were firmly confident that by 1965 they would be ready to deliver a programmed Eugene Stone to Covert Operations."
