DISCLOSURE RULE FOR 'POLITICAL' MASONS
New guidelines to be introduced into the Scottish parliament this
week will shed some light on the role of Freemasons in political life
with MSPs being forced to declare their membership of the secret society.
The new disclosure rules have been drawn up by the Standards Committee
made up of MSPs and they also ensure that MSPs disclose their share
holdings, if they are over £25,000 in any one company. Membership
of other bodies will also be declarable.
The Standards Committee will also recommend that the parliament sets
up a register of commercial lobbying companies which seek to influence
Members of Parliament, including names of their staff and their clients.
They are also calling for the Executive to set up a parallel scheme
to ensure that lobbying of ministers and civil servants should be
opened up to public scrutiny with a more transparent system.
It is to be hoped that the implications of this Scottish model which
in effect should generally ensure more transparency in public life,
will be extended to other Parliaments and Assemblies in these Islands.
The influence of the Masonic order on the Scottish political scene
at first glance seems fairly small but in other smaller jurisdictions
such as the Isle of Man some senior figures in government are reputedly
members of the sect.
