Mon 7 Oct 2002 Lionisation of slain minister angers Israeli Left Ben Lynfield In Jerusalem ANTI-Arab racism edged closer to the mainstream in Israel yesterday as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s government promoted a new hero: an assassinated minister who advocated expelling all Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The minister, Rehavam Zeevi, was honoured yesterday with a postage stamp, a state ceremony and an advisory to schools to teach about his legacy. But not everyone was willing to partake in what liberal Israelis view as a bid to create a right-wing foil to Yitzhak Rabin, the assassinated architect of the Oslo peace process. Israel’s small left-wing opposition accused the government of "whitewashing" the racism inherent in Mr Zeevi’s ideas while many schools disregarded the advisory. Mr Zeevi, who headed the extreme-Right Moledet party, was assassinated a year ago by Palestinians. Mr Zeevi’s roles were many: he was an underground fighter, tourism minister, a general, a counter- terrorism advisor and director of the Land of Israel Museum in Tel Aviv. He was best known, however, as the person who, as the head of the Moledet (Homeland) party, turned the idea of expelling Palestinians into a political platform. He used the euphemism "transfer" and spoke of a voluntary exodus of Palestinians to set himself apart from the banned Kach party, which espoused forced removals. But he made little effort to conceal his hatred of Arabs, whom he described as "lice" and "cancer". The lesson plans for discussion about Mr Zeevi’s heritage in schools give no mention of the concept of "transfer". Instead, he is described as someone whose "love of the homeland" included a knowledge of its every stone and flower, who spoke an exemplary "clean Hebrew", who "kept the faith with his comrades in arms even if he differed with their political views". Hashem Mahameed, an Arab member of the knesset, said: "This government is trying to legitimise Zeevi and it is making me anxious ... This man was all about forcing people to leave their land. What the government is doing is simply a trick. The moment you mention Zeevi all the children will think about transfer, not beautiful Hebrew." At L’Omaniyut high school, pupils said that if teachers taught about Mr Zeevi, they would stay away. "It’s a very different situation, but you could also go around telling people that Hitler spoke a beautiful German," said Yossi Hillel, a senior.
