I rarely read novels, but now and then one finds a story which is truly great, and
The Lord of the Rings is one of them. I have been a Tolkien fan for a long time. I
liked The Hobbit, and also the follow up, The Lord of the Rings.
I was really curious to see what the movie would be like when it came out. Its hard
to follow if you haven't read the books. This first movie, the Fellowship of the Ring,
is really quite boring compared to what comes in the later books.
Interestingly, this great work has strong ties to South Africa. I think Tolkien
lived in South Africa at one time. He wrote it before, during and after World War II.
It was written over a period of 13 years. He had been involved in World War I and lost
most of his friends there. Although the book has a mythical setting, clearly it
reflects on the reality of evil and the need to fight for survival against evil. While
the subject matter may be mythical, the story line and the message is extremely real
and very relevant to all people.
One of the things I love about the book and movie is its clear depiction of good
versus evil. The values are clear. There is no compromise deal you can strike with
evil. Eventually, all races must unite to survive against the evil which threatens to
engulf them all.
Another aspect of the book is how the humblest of races, the Hobbits, find
themselves drawn into a struggle of mammoth proportions and how some of them rise to
the occasion. The fellowship sets forth on a journey, attempting to do the impossible.
But the incredible odds facing them do not daunt them. They do it anyway.
But what is the cause of all this trouble? It is about power! Power, and the lust
for power lies at the root of all the problems. Tolkien was brilliant in choosing a
simple object such as a ring, to depict this power. The movie excels in showing how
this damned ring causes trouble wherever it goes. It does not take long before before
that ring affects anyone who is near it.
That is the story of this world, and most especially of Africa. Power! The lust for
power is a most dangerous thing. As I explain to people in my book, Government by
Deception, the Russian "Sauron" came to the blacks decades ago and whispered in their
ear "With this system [of Communism] you can stay in power - FOREVER!" They came and
they tempted the blacks. They sought out among the black people those who lusted the
most for power and they taught them how to get it, and how to keep it. I have often
observed that black leaders in Africa must surely be drunk with power even though by
the standards of the rest of the world their power is little. All these leaders grew
up in huts. They knew little of the world until the Russians, Chinese and their allies
took them under their wing and educated them in all the wrong things. They taught them
terrorism and socialism. They taught them to lie about the Western world and most
especially Colonialism. They tempted them and told them that they could help them to
get into power and to stay in power. Democracy was only a front - only a pretense and
an excuse. The Russian "Sauron" came and chose those most unfit for power - namely the
Power Hungry - and elevated them right to the top. They are drunk with power, and mad
with temptation. They will tell any lie, and kill any person in order to stay there.
It is no wonder that much of Africa ended up being ruled by dictators because Russia
played a big role in putting them there. So did China. Mugabe was sponsored by the
Chinese.
However, even though the darkness of evil has covered the continent of Africa and
turned it into Mordor, there remain small glimmers of hope. Small people, like the
Hobbits, fight personal wars against odds too incredible to believe. They do so
because they are committed to certain ideas and they have risen to the occasion.
There are many wealthy or formerly powerful people who, like the Wizard Saruman, did
not have the gumption to stand up to evil, and who instead embraced it - like the
wealthy of South Africa and certain people in Zimbabwe.
There are many little private wars being fought for Africa. They are being fought by
people with websites. They are being fought through newsletters, magazines and
newspaper articles. They are struggling against the tremendous evil which is engulfing
all of Africa. The odds of success are totally irrelevant to these people. All that
matters to them is that they make their stand.
I see it happening in South Africa all the time. A while back some white people were
arrested because they were plotting against the government trying to raise an army to
overthrow it. Many such little groups have sprung up and been thrown in jail over the
years.
In Zimbabwe, the struggle is even more desperate. We saw some footage on South
African TV of hundreds of dogs being abandoned because the farmers and their guards
have been run off their farms. Hundreds of dogs were put to sleep by the SPCA in
Zimbabwe. They dug a mass grave and wheel-barrows-full of dogs were summarily dumped
into these graves - as the darkness extends its grip over that country.
But I see the Hobbits are busy. Black people, white people... it does not matter...
each desperately trying to get the news out, trying to make a difference while
struggling to feed themselves. But their spirits are strong.
I mentioned last week, Jay Jay Sibanda, the President of the Concerned Foreign Based
Zimbabweans group in South Africa. This week I met with him and his 2IC (2nd In
Charge). They were telling me that 5 Kg of maize (corn) meal in Zimbabwe now costs
Z$1,500 if you can get it. To give you an idea, a teacher's salary in Zimbabwe is
Z$20,000 per month. They handed me photos of how desperate blacks as well as "war
veterans" were slaughtering Zimbabwe's wonderful wildlife. Animals (some of them
endangered), are being snared and killed in the most horrific ways. In the region of
60% of Zimbabwe's wildlife has been wiped out in the last 2 years. It is an
environmental disaster of the first degree.
I would like to mention that all this talk of "drought" - the non-existant drought -
has caused me to watch Zimbabwe like a hawk on our weather maps daily on TV. We do not
normally see a full map of Zimbabwe. But we see its southern (and driest) portion. I
have noted in recent weeks that Zimbabwe is definitely getting more rainfall in its
driest areas than we get anywhere in South Africa. Since the rainy season is starting,
I will watch this all through summer and report back on it.
When you speak to people face to face you often hear a lot more than what ends up in
the newspaper. Jay Jay's 2IC told me he used to be a school teacher in Zimbabwe. He
was also a Human Rights Activist. He fled the country 6 months ago because things were
getting too hot for him. He said that the CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation -
Mugabe's "KGB") had infiltrated the school and was reporting on the activities of many
black teachers who were activists. He said that since school teachers often have free
time, this lent itself to them engaging in such activities. Mugabe was then trying to
implement rules to force teachers to stay at school 8 hours a day. He said that Mugabe
had implemented many rules across the board to hobble people and to make activism and
anti-government activities as difficult as possible. He said that the CIO agents even
saw to it that "assignments" were handed out suddenly to teachers in order for it to
deliberately interfere with the activities they were involved in. He said that he
eventually fled because things got too dangerous for him in Harare. He has left his
family behind there.
This week Jay Jay had his own brush with Mugabe's CIO here in Johannesburg. Jay Jay
and his 2IC live a hand-to-mouth existence, often dependent upon the kindness of
others for food, for phone calls, for photocopies - for everything. He is desperately
trying to raise funds for his organisation. He arranged with a certain hotel, which is
owned by a Zimbabwean, to allow him to hold a meeting for potential donors. He had
arranged it for next week. Then two black men came this week and they went to the
hotel management. They told them that Jay Jay and his 2IC were "terrorists". They said
they were from the MDC [Movement for Democratic Change] and they wanted to hold a
meeting on the same day at the same location where Jay Jay wanted his. Eventually, the
Hotel manager, not knowing what was going on, gave in to their demands. Jay Jay was
frantic and in a panic. Eventually he managed to get someone to allow him to use their
phone to make a call to Zimbabwe. A white Zimbabwean then intervened with the hotel
management putting them at ease and allowing Jay Jay to have his meeting next week.
Jay Jay told me that there were CIO agents who had penetrated the MDC. The MDC is
Mugabe's opposition. But due to the massive number of black Zimbabweans (2 million+)
now living in South Africa, they had opened offices here. Now the CIO was penetrating
the MDC in South Africa. Those two black men who had gone to deliberately botch up Jay
Jay's donor meeting had long been suspected of being CIO agents.
It seems Mugabe's intelligence organisation is successfully managing to destroy the
MDC. The MDC is dying both inside Zimbabwe and outside it. They had a shadow Minister
of Finance in the form of a white businessman named Eddie Cross. But there was also a
black communist. The two were at loggerheads with each other. Then the MDC got rid of
Eddie Cross and now the communist has all the say. I have heard from another
Zimbabwean source too - who is well connected - that the MDC has been heavily
penetrated from early on at a high level by CIO agents who have helped to misdirect
it. I was told that Morgan Tsvangirai is genuine, but many people in senior positions
around him are probably working for Mugabe. Jay Jay points out this would explain how
Tsvangirai was set up by that man in Canada who claimed to have worked for the MOSSAD.
He is certain that traitors led Tsvangirai into a trap where Mugabe would claim the
MDC was plotting to overthrow the government.
In fact, an even more horrific story has emerged. A newspaper in Zimbabwe exposed a
plot by Mugabe to send troops into Mozambique and to have them "invade" Zimbabwe. He
would arrange for the army to intercept them. They would capture them and they would
"confess". They would claim that they were working for the MDC. Mugabe would then be
able to swoop down on the MDC leadership. Treason in Zimbabwe carries the death
penalty and in that way Mugabe would be able to rid himself of the MDC in one swoop.
The disillusionment with the MDC is spawning a new political party in Zimbabwe
called the PFP (People's Freedom Party). I am not sure if they are a Mugabe front or
not. Jay Jay at this time is very supportive of them. Although I have heard some news
that there is some strangeness surrounding them too.
So, the "Hobbits" are struggling, in the face of incredible evil, and against odds
which verge on the near impossible to make a stand for their country and their
families. His meeting is going ahead.
Jay Jay was telling me of protests he was planning in South Africa. He said it is
difficult doing things with the Zimbabweans here because most of them are unemployed
and live in great poverty. But, they would rather be here than in Zimbabwe.
A rich white woman donated a 2 acre piece of land in Johannesburg to Jay Jay where
hopefully, one day he can build a clinic to help care for the Zimbabweans. He told me
he wants to have people sign a petition against the South African government. But his
major project is that he and thirty others want to take a petition, and make a public
display of it, by walking 400 Km from Johannesburg to the Zimbabwe border. They want
to attrack publicity for this event and to highlight the plight of all Zimbabweans. He
told me he was often successful in getting support from whites in South Africa -
especially those of us who have links back to Zimbabwe. But he also said that many
black South Africans were backing them.
I heard of another very interesting incident this week related to me by a
conservative Afrikaner friend of mine. He told me of a white man who gave a speech to
a crowd of blacks here in South Africa. He told them what he thought of the current
situation in this country and of everyone's fate. Apparently the blacks listened with
great interest and hung on every word he said. This incident shows that here in South
Africa, there may yet be some hope when it comes to convincing the blacks here of the
truth.
Jay Jay recounted to me an incident he had where a black South African woman phoned
him and blasted him for his petition (which you can see on my web page at:
www.AfricanCrisis.org/CFBZ.asp). She said to him "Who are YOU that you can come here
and tell us how to vote?" He told me she was extremely angry and called him a loser
and a nobody and told him to go and work and feed his family rather than engaging in
politics!
I laughed when I heard this. I said to Jay Jay and his 2IC "Well, here you are,
blacks in South Africa, trying to talk to blacks and you are experiencing the same
reaction I got from whites 20 years ago!" We chuckled at the thought that although we
were of different races, we were experiencing the same reaction from our own races
when we tried to pass the lessons and experiences of Zimbabwe on to them! I told them
that in my opinion, black South Africans were surprisingly ignorant about the history
of Zimbabwe. Both of them agreed wholeheartedly with that statement. The ANC, I had
noted, had always been careful not to expose all the realities of Zimbabwe to their
black South African electorate. But now these black Zimbabweans could help burst their
bubble. There is no question in my mind that the black Zimbabweans who have fled to
South Africa could be a political powder keg of the first order of magnitude if
unleashed upon the blacks of this country. One thing Robert Mugabe did do, and it is
his only success, is that he educated black Zimbabweans well. They are probably the
most literate blacks in Africa. They could be a very dangerous force for the ANC
[African National Congress] here in South Africa. That is why I am so keen to help
them. We could kill two birds with one stone. The path they are walking is of course
very dangerous - but danger is immaterial to them. They are desperate people. They
know their families are slowly starving north of the border. Most Zimbabweans who work
here use their money to buy food and have it shipped to Zimbabwe.
It is delightful seeing these black Zimbabweans and their positive attitude towards
white people. They don't even worry about the old enemy the "Rhodesians" any more.
They know that whites are NOT the enemy, and that is a part of their message to other
blacks. They know where the real evil comes from.
RENAMO in Mozambique was started like that. FRELIMO had the run of the country and
then the blacks realised that they were just communists. Back in the 1970's, Rhodesia
needed a cover for cross-border Special Forces operations. So they invented a fake
organisation which was opposed to FRELIMO. They broadcast fake news about it. When
blacks in Mozambique heard of it, they flocked across the border into Rhodesia to join
this organisation. Within a short time Rhodesia was training blacks to fight in
Mozambique.
In theory the black Zimbabweans inside South Africa could be an army waiting to take
on Robert Mugabe. If we had an anti-Mugabe government in power here, we could arm and
train blacks here to infiltrate Zimbabwe and to overthrow the #####. But it will not
happen while the ANC is here. Mugabe needs the ANC here. If the ANC were to lose an
election here then Mugabe's days would be numbered because the majority of South
Africans are very much opposed to Mugabe.
Many black Zimbabweans flee to Botswana too. Or they go to Botswana and then from
there flee to South Africa. Botswana is an American ally. If the USA wanted to, they
could set up training camps in Botswana, train Zimbabweans and start a war on Mugabe
from that side.
It is so sad. The will to destroy Mugabe is there. But if nobody helps, it won't
happen. He is struggling. Although he is winning the clandestine war against the MDC
now, he cannot contain the unhappiness indefinitely. And if black Zimbabweans flee to
South Africa, they could be used as a weapon against him. Two million black
Zimbabweans in South Africa, coupled with hundreds of thousands who have fled to
England and elsewhere, could provide a ready-made army to destroy the "Sauron" of
Zimbabwe.
We "Hobbits", who are basically nobodies, will continue our little struggle because
in our hearts we know it is right. The odds do not matter. But if only the USA or the
Europeans wanted to, we could destroy Mugabe with ease. If the blacks in Zimbabwe were
armed they WOULD DO IT. They hate him, and I have heard that his level of support may
be even less than 30% - it might be virtually non-existant. But he has the guns and
the army and a tight control of all power.
Wars in Africa tend to explode out of the blue. It is probably due to people waiting
until the frustration is unbearable and when something gives, it gives quickly and
very violently. With the right kind of approach, Mugabe might be run out of town in a
flash if only the people saw his grip weakening. Already, the action of farmers in
defying him, may help to show that there are cracks showing and that he is not in
total control all the time.
I have a favourite cartoon about Mugabe from earlier this year. It is called "The
Lord of the Rings". It shows Mugabe knocking out all his opponents. It is my favourite
cartoon of him and I think it is brilliant. It comes from a newspaper in South Africa.

I have a final request. This "Lord of the Rings" business has caught my fancy
completely. I would like to ask for a bit of help. In the early 1980's, I met a guy
who actually had a proper wargame developed by SP or SPI (Simulations Publications?)
based on The Lord of the Rings. But I lost contact with him shortly afterwards. It was
a lovely game - done as a proper board wargame. I have been wondering if there is any
place I can obtain a second-hand copy of it, or whether it is in production any more?
(I doubt it). If anyone knows, I'd really like to get hold of it. It is not the game
which you play with figures - it was a map based on that in the book showing The
Shire, Isengard, Mordor, etc. The game not only mimicked the movement of the
Fellowship, but also the raising of the armies of Elves, Dwarves, etc. If anyone can
