Narco News School of Authentic Journalism
Update and Frequently Asked Questions
Dear Colleagues,
With a little more than a month to go before our November 15th deadline for
applications to the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism to be held
next February on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, here's an update on the Six
Full Scholarships being offered.
If you haven't received your application yet, please send an email,
specifying whether you want your application in Spanish or English, to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here in the Narco Newsroom, we're thrilled with the quantity and quality of
the readers who've asked for applications already, less than two weeks after
we first announced the program. See a list below of the places and
organizations from which we've received more than 200 application requests.
We have asked various news organizations and academic institutions to
consider sponsoring additional scholarships. If you or your organization
would like to sponsor two or more students to attend this 10-day workshop in
authentic journalism, please send us an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Some folks have written us with questions about the program and its
requirements. We'll answer those questions here. This FAQ may also be seen
online at:

Frequently Asked Questions
The Narco News School of Authentic Journalism FAQ:
Q. Does a person need to go through this application process if they do not
wish to apply for one of the six financial grants?
A. Yes.
Q. How many students do you plan to bring to the Yucatán?
A. There will be a minimum of 12 students and a maximum of 50; the exact
number will depend on resources. In addition to the Six Scholarship
recipients, additional applicants will be invited to attend, all of them
gratis, if they can get themselves to the Yucatán and cover their food and
lodging costs. Some partial scholarships will also be awarded. These
decisions will depend on the resources available as of December 1st, when we
will announce our list of Full and Partial Scholarship winners selected from
the applicants. If some accepted students decline, we will choose from the
applications already received.
Q. I believe that X amount of Indymedia journalists from my region are
considering the possibility of traveling overland to attend this school.
Would this work for you all?
A. Everyone, of course, is invited to the OUT FROM THE SHADOWS: Ending Drug
Prohibition in the 21st Century conference in Mérida, Yucatán, February 12th
to 15th, 2003. For more information on registration or press passes for that
event, see:
http://www.stopthedrugwar.org/shadows/
As for the Authentic Journalism Program, all potential attendees must still
fill out the application form and will be selected on the merits. If you are
already planning to be in Yucatán for the Out from the Shadows drug
legalization summit, obviously that will be a positive factor that we will
take into consideration.
We want to stress that, in the interests of fairness to all the other
applicants, and to the size limitations of the J-School program, nobody
should just show up in February and expect to be invited to the seminar. All
students must apply by November 15th. As your college president, I have no
discretion to add additional students who do not go through the application
process. I will have some minimal discretion to add additional faculty or
staff.
Q. I'm a troublemaker, and I know nothing about journalism. Can I apply?
A. Yes!
Q. Sadly, I am a veteran of 35 years' media experience. I wonder if that
cancels me out from consideration?
A. No, that does not cancel you out from consideration. Yes, you may apply!
Q. If not chosen, may I pay for the seminar?
A. No. All students will attend gratis, and all must go through the
application process and be chosen in order to attend as a student.
Q. Can two of us apply as a team?
A. We strongly discourage joint applications. Your chances are much better
if each of you fill out individual applications. If you think we should
select other applicants who you know, please mention that in your
application and we will take that into consideration as well.
Q. Can I bring my partner?
A. You can certainly bring your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, or any
friend to the OUT FROM THE SHADOWS conference February 12 to 15 - which
includes Valentine's Day - in accordance with that event's registration or
press guidelines. But the other six days of our seminar are exclusively for
the students selected. The workshops and classes will be closed to people
beyond our students, faculty and staff. The J-School bus or buses that will
transport students to and from our seaside campus will also be exclusively
for students, faculty and staff, and we insist that our students travel with
us and dedicate all ten days - February 10th to 20th, 2003 - fulltime to the
seminar.
Q. Are there any age or gender limitations? (I am a 51-year-old female)
A. Please apply. There are no limitations on age, gender, creed,
nationality, race, sexual orientation, or any other human quality. We will
seek a diverse student body, with a healthy balance between students of
either gender who speak Spanish, or who speak English, or who speak both.
We're looking for a few good troublemakers and muckrakers to be chosen from
all kinds of human beings everywhere.
Q. I'm from the CIA. Can I come?
A. No, silly.
Q. How can my media organization or academic institution sponsor additional
students?
A. Please contact me through [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll discuss the
details.
Q. What kind of people have requested applications so far?
