Ceremony marks birth of quads as Christians By Valarie Honeycutt Spears HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER Domestic partners Michael Meehan and Thomas Dysarz
worried over how the Roman Catholic church would receive their quadruplets,
given the doctrine that homosexual acts are sinful and surrogate motherhood is
prohibited.
But yesterday, the Rev. Paul Prabell blessed the
men as he would any other parents and baptized their 3-month-old quadruplets at
Lexington's Cathedral of Christ the King.
"This is what Christ would do," said Meehan, the
quadruplets' biological father, after the ceremony. "He blessed people who were
cast out of the church. (The babies) are God's children. That's how the church
should view it."
The ceremony, attended by about 30 friends and
relatives, marked the children's birth as Christians.
The four babies were conceived through an in-vitro
fertilization that paired a surrogate mother's eggs with the sperm of Meehan, a
Lexington lawyer, who plans to raise the children with Dysarz, his male domestic
partner.
The quadruplets' July 26 birth via surrogate mother
to gay partners is thought to be unprecedented. It drew worldwide attention to
the two men.
Prabell said yesterday that he doesn't recall ever
baptizing a child of an openly gay parent. Baptizing quadruplets was also a
first for him. Nationwide, the baptisms of adopted children of gay couples have
received media attention.
Prabell said in an interview Friday that no one had
objected to the christening, although he expects that "some people would feel
that the christening would be an endorsement of homosexuality and surrogate
parenting."
But it was not those issues that entered into the
decision to baptize the quadruplets. Rather, the main question the Catholic
Diocese of Lexington and Prabell wanted answered was whether the infants would
be raised as Catholic Christians.
Both men were adamant that the three boys, Michael,
Jacob and Tristan, and one girl, Taylor, would be raised as Catholics.
The men were grateful for the church's acceptance
yesterday. "I didn't expect him to bless us both. Just like any other couple,"
Dysarz said.
In all, 12 godparents and witnesses, all married or
soon-to-be married heterosexual couples, participated in the ceremony. "They
will be there to help us if we need them," Dysarz said.
After the christening, Margy Larmour, a hair
stylist at the Planet Salon that the men own and Jacob's godmother, hosted a
reception at her McDowell Road home.
Fayette County Attorney Margaret Kannensohn, one of
the Larmours' closest friends and longtime neighbors, dropped by to wish the new
parents well.
The men told the guests, who included Prabell, that
they decided not to hire nannies or a baby nurse as they had anticipated before
the births. Meehan's mother and friends help out some, but otherwise Meehan and
Dysarz handle all the parenting chores.
"You're talking about family," Kannensohn said. "In
the past, we've narrowed the definition way too far. It's people caring for
children."
