Senator Wellstone in Context
Dear Michael,
And now the plane of the high-profile Jew who voted against war with Iraq goes down. Sen. Wellstone beat a rabid Zionist several years ago for his seat, and was criticized for not raising his kids to be "Jewish," for positing a moral equivalence between Israeli and Palestinian terror--and then, facing a tough re-election, voted against war with Iraq. The money which propped him up because of his backing of abortion started shifting. Then the plane drops. Silencing arguably the most prominent Leftist in the Senate was a potent symbol of triumph for Israel in our country.

Hoffman responds:
I don't buy the media line that Wellstone was anti-Zionist or a thorn in the side of the Israeli lobby. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) actually fits that profile better than Wellstone. Most Democrat party stalwarts like Wellstone are assets of the more secular Israeli Labour party, which favors a cunning and less obvious dispossession of the Palestinians. U.S. Republicans,meanwhile, are mainly assets of Ariel Sharon's Likud party, which is driven by the zealotry and madness of the Talmudic settlers, for whom diplomatic cunning and world opinion take a backseat to pulverizing the Palestinian people and "transferring" the survivors.
The key test of Wellstone's loyalty to "Israel first," came last May when the House and Senate voted on a resolution in support of Sharon's atrocities during the Gaza Ghetto Uprising. Only two U.S. senators voted against this disgraceful Congressional resolution in support of Israeli genocide: Ernest Hollings and Robert Byrd, along with a handful of mostly black Representatives in the House such as Earl Hilliard (D-Alabama) and Cynthia McKinney (D-Georgia), as well as a couple of courageous dissenters such as Ron Paul (R-Texas).

Egypt's promotion of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion
The recent flap (see the front page of Saturday's NY Times) over Egypt's prominent promotion of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is similar to the semi-annual outrage generated in the West over Arab promotion of tales of "Jews making matzoh balls out of gentile children at Passover."
The Arab pre-occupation with moldy Czarist manuscripts, or recycled medieval legends of child murder by rabbis, obscures the fact that the Egyptian, Syrian and Saudi promoters of these questionable and disputed exposes, have had a ring-side seat at the indisputable spectacle of Israeli mass murder of the Palestinians and Lebanese since at least the 1950s, and have failed to produce a single movie or book adequately documenting these war crimes.
Publicity for and documentation of Israeli war crimes in Lebanon in 1982 or in Palestine in 1988 or 2002 is the most credible, persuasive and damaging educational outreach the Arabs could perform with regard to Zionist racism and hegemony. Several years ago I wrote in the Muslim newspaper "Crescent-International" that one out of every ten Palestinians should be given a digital video camera and trained how to use it. If 10% of the Palestinian people had been "armed" with video cameras when the Israeli army invaded Jenin last April, there would be no confusion about the war crimes perpetrated there today, and the hunt for the Palestinians' cameras would have been the highest priority of the Israeli gangsters, who banned reporters from entering Jenin, or witnessing the Israeli assault on Christ's birthplace in Bethlehem, last spring.
As long as Arab and Muslim leaders fail to commemorate and permanently document contemporary Israeli war crimes, rather than circulating ancient folk tales and disputed "Protocols," they will manage the remarkable feat of making the Arab victims of Israeli racism appear to be the most prejudiced parties to the conflict in the Middle East.

Putin and the Chechens
Russian war crimes in Chechnya include razing most of the country's major cities, along with the kind of mass rape and murder of civilians which the German people in the east experienced at Russian hands after "liberation" in 1945. The mass murder perpetrated in Chechnya is not any kind of burning issue in the West, any more than the massacres and terror inflicted by the North Korean and Chinese Communists trouble the sleep of George W. Bush, as he hosts the Red Chinese killers at bucolic barbecues at his Texas ranch. (What could be more American?).
When marginalized people like the Chechens use guns and bombs to resist genocide they are "terrorists" in the eyes of the Western media. Partisans who used terrorism against the German occupation army in Poland are among the West's most celebrated freedom-fighters, however. Go figure.
Putin put down the siege by desperate Chechen youths both male and female at a Moscow theatre last weekend, with poison gas, killing or seriously sickening hundreds, out of the need not to appear as a piper tiger to the Muslim opposition. This is vintage Old World despotism, the deadly, dull tactics of Ivan the Terrible and Genghis Khan. Because the western media have failed to report the extent of Russian crimes in Chechnya, we tend to side with Putin the Terrible against the "terrorists" of Chechnya, who came to Moscow to retaliate for the murder of their husbands, children, mothers, fathers and brothers by the Russian military. A large segment of the Russian people themselves appear to be ashamed of Putin's war, but they have no more influence over Putin's Chechen policy than the American people have over Bush's Iraq policy. We are returning to the era of kings disguised as presidents and prime ministers.

Gore Vidal Suspects Bush of 9/11 Complicity
Famed American author Gore Vidal, a one-time confidant of President John F. Kennedy, is calling for an investigation into President Bush's complicity in the 9/11 attacks.
Vidal, writing in "The Enemy Within," an essay published Sunday in the London, England newspaper,"The Observer," states that "astonished military experts cannot fathom why the government's 'automatic standard order of procedure in the event of a hijacking' was not followed. These procedures," says Vidal, "determine that fighter planes should automatically be sent aloft as soon as an airliner has deviated from its flight plan. Presidential authority is not required until a plane is to be shot down. But, on September 11, no decision to start launching fighter planes was taken until 9:40 am, 80 minutes after air controllers first knew that Flight 11 had been hijacked, and 50 minutes after the first plane had struck the North Tower...By law, the fighter jets should have been in the air by around 8:15 am. If they had, all the hijacked planes might have been diverted and shot down."
Vidal, who makes his home in Italy, noted that, "Osama was chosen on aesthetic grounds to be the frightening logo for our long-contemplated invasion and conquest of Afghanistan ...the (Bush) administration is convinced that Americans are so simple-minded that they can deal with no scenario more complex than the venerable, lone, crazed killer (this time with zombie helpers) who does evil just for the fun of it 'cause...we're rich 'n free 'n he's not." Vidal also attacks the American media's failure to investigate September 11: "Apparently 'conspiracy stuff' is now shorthand for unspeakable truth."
