Time for a change: Anti-war Democrats should replace Lantos with Maad Abu- Ghazalah

Published Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 in the San Mateo County editions of the Daily News

At age 74, it's time for Congressman Tom Lantos to retire. Not because of his age, but
because his views on the most serious issue facing the nation -- war with Iraq -- are
so
wildly out of sync with his constituents.

But since Lantos isn't going to step down, we're recommending voters make that choice
for
him and vote for his opponent, Maad Abu-Ghazalah, a 40-year-old software entrepreneur
and attorney from Pacifica.

You may recall that it was Abu-Ghazalah who put up a billboard on Highway 101
describing
Attorney General John Ashcroft as "The Ethnic Profiler," with the catch line
"suspicious
looking immigrants beware."

Abu-Ghazalah, or Maad as he tells people to call him, is a Palestinian who was born in
Nablus on the West Bank and came to the U.S. when he entered college. He has a
bachelor's degree, a graduate degree from the University of Virginia in computer
science
and a law degree from Santa Clara University. He has a business that sells software
he's
written that helps lawyers keep track of their calendars.

He's just as qualified to hold a seat in Congress as Lantos was when he was elected
back in
1980. At the time, Lantos was a college professor who had gained some notoriety by
appearing on public television to talk about foreign affairs.

If elected, Abu-Ghazalah would be the first Muslim to serve in Congress.

He's is running as a Liber[t]arian, but calls himself a libertarian with a small l. He
sounds
like a Democrat on most issues, but particularly on the war against Iraq.

Abu-Ghazalah agrees Saddam Hussein should be disarmed, but through non-violent means
involving the U.N. And he said the U.S. should have the same policy toward all
countries
suspected of possessing weapons of mass destruction -- Israel, Iraq, India and North
Korea, to name a few.

"A violent attack is just going to make the world more precarious," Abu-Ghazalah said.

He opposes the Patriot Act that Lantos supported, which gives, among other things, the
government broad rights to wiretap citizens without warrants and detain immigrants
without trials.

Lantos, as the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee, is the
most vocal member of his party backing the congressional resolution authorizing the
Bush
administration to launch a military strike against Iraq if diplomatic efforts to
disarm that
country fail. Turn on C-Span any hour of the day, and you're likely to see him wagging
his
finger as he gives a speech advocating a unilateral attack.

Lantos frequently compares Saddam Hussein and Iraq to Hitler and Germany, saying that
if
the U.S. doesn't attack, we'll be doing the same thing Neville Chamberlain did in 1939
when
he let the Germans take most of Europe. The problem with that analogy is that Iraq
hasn't
rolled its tanks into neighboring countries like Germany had at the time.

We have no doubt Lantos' passion is real, resulting from his own experience as a
Hungarian
Jew growing up in Hitler's Europe.

But Lantos has supported every war that's been proposed since he entered office, from
Grenada to the Persian Gulf. In fact, he was the only member of Congress from the Bay
Area to vote in favor of U.S. entry into the Gulf War in 1991.

And since Lantos won last time with 70 percent of the vote, he's taking this election
for
granted. After Congress went into recess Oct. 18, Lantos remained in Washington,
evidently
feeling the election is his to win, while Abu-Ghazalah is here campaigning away.

Abu-Ghazalah offers a fresh alternative to the stale and unresponsive attitude of
Lantos.
Even if you have supported Lantos in the past for his stands on other issues, consider
voting
for Abu- Ghazalah as a protest to show that you're against a unilateral, unprovoked
attack
by the United States on Iraq.
