Butler's tales hurt Princes
His saddest day ... Wills at Di funeral
By CHARLES RAE Royal Correspondent
PRINCE William and his younger brother Harry are devastated that former
butler Paul Burrell has revealed Diana’s sex secrets.
A close family friend said yesterday: “This is absolutely dreadful for
the boys. They cannot understand why their mother’s reputation is being
dragged through the mud like this.”
Both William, 20, and Harry, 18, are shattered that Burrell described
intimate moments in Princess Diana’s private life in his 39-page statement
to police.
They were shocked to hear his stories about taking their mother’s male
lovers in and out of Kensington Palace in the boot of his car.
And they cannot forgive him for revealing that Diana went to meet heart
surgeon Hasnat Khan on her birthday — naked except for sapphire and
diamond earrings underneath her fur coat.
The family friend said: “Burrell was the most trusted of the Princess’s
staff and now they feel that he has betrayed her.
“And whatever the friendly terms they thought of him in before they are
bitterly disappointed in him now.
“It is unpleasant for them to hear of a trail of lovers being sneaked
in and out and about the Princess going out wearing a fur coat and little
else.
“No one would like to read about their mother in that sort of
light.
“She is dead and she is not here to defend herself and more importantly
she is not here to explain to her boys.
“It is a very one-sided story, very unfair and very hurtful to them
both. The only real losers in this are going to be the boys and their
mother’s memory. No one can understand the amount of detail Burrell has
gone into. One presumes it was to show how close he was to the
Princess.
A woman betrayed ... Paul Burrell said he was her
rock, but he spilled the most sensitive secrets of Diana's
life
“But he seems to have gone into far more detail than necessary to
show the sort of relationship he had with her.”
Last night a former employee of the Princess said: “Paul Burrell has
betrayed everyone. ‘The Rock’ has finally broken up into tiny pieces.
“But the real losers are the boys. They will be the ones most deeply
affected by what Paul Burrell has said in his statement.
“This is a man who has professed all along that he would take the royal
secrets to the grave. Yet in his statement he goes into needless graphic
detail about the Princess’s private life.
“For someone who has been reticent to speak about his life in royal
service, he seems to have gone into great and unnecessary detail.”
Surgeon's shock at love affair
bombshell
Devastated ... Dr Khan
By PETRINA VOUSDEN
PRINCESS Diana’s former lover Dr Hasnat Khan was said to be devastated
last night at the explosive revelations of their affair.
Dr Khan, 42, refused to comment at the London Chest Hospital, where he
is a heart surgeon.
But a hospital spokesman revealed: “I think he would be very upset to
see his name connected with this.”
The amazing details of their relationship came out in Paul Burrell’s
statement to police.
Burrell revealed how he smuggled Dr Khan into Kensington Palace in the
boot of his car for secret meetings with Diana.
He said she was so in love with the doctor that she wanted to marry
him.
Burrell said he was trusted to deliver private letters from Diana to Dr
Khan at Brompton Hospital, in West London — where he used to work.
He also revealed that as a special treat, Diana turned up to meet the
surgeon in only a fur coat and diamond earrings.
Royal writer JUDY WADE has revealed that Diana
developed an interest in everything Asian as her romance with Dr Khan
blossomed.
She began burning pungent incense in her palace apartment — and watched
any Pakistani films she could find on video.
One evening her hairstylist Natalie Symonds arrived to find Diana all
alone upstairs in her bedroom watching a video of a black and white
Pakistani film.
Diana sighed: “Aren’t they a good-looking race of people?”
The besotted Princess also began wearing Eastern dress, especially the
salwar kameez, a long shirt worn in Pakistan over billowing trousers.
Despite the clash of cultures in their backgrounds, the Princess said:
“He’s insecure and I’m insecure, so we have a lot in common.”
