-Caveat Lector-

This new list needs Jews. Why? Because they have brains and can argue this
matter intelligently. Is anyone else able to do so?

Subject: [PHIL-SCI-TECH] "Quaecumque Vera"

"Whatsoever things be True" (Motto of the University of Alberta which gave
me a parchment saying, verbatim, "Franklin Wayne Poley is a doctor of
philosophy in psychology").

Philosophy of Science: what is science about? Science is about truth.

Physics Professor Roger G. Newton writes in "The Truth of Science:
Physical Theories and Reality" (Harvard University Press, 1997),
concerning scientific truth that "...no other field of human endeavour is
more dominated by what Bronowski calls 'the principle of truthfulness'"
(p. 222).

Karl Popper says in "Unended Quest" (1976) that "In matters of the
intellect, the only things worth striving for are true theories, or
theories which come nearer to the truth - at any rate nearer than some
other (competing) theory, for example an older one." (p.22).

"Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." John 18:37

"Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?" John 18:38

"Veritas odium parit" or "The truth begets hatred"
-Roman saying

Propositional Truth:
"... a proposition ... is true if there is a fact to which it
corresponds, if it expresses what is the case."
-Charles A. Baylis, Runes Dictionary of Philosophy. For example, the
proposition, "It is raining" is true if it is the case that it is raining.

Factual Truth:
A fact is "an indubitable truth of actuality" -James K. Feibleman, Runes
Dictionary of Philosophy.

"The truth is out there"
X Files motto

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus science, higher education and the stated objective of the Christian
faith have common ground in the seeking and finding of truth. Lawyer
Gerald Chipeur's client, Cynthia, has launched an $18,000,000
law suit against UBC, claiming, in layman's terms, some form of
"religious discrimination". Let me invite the protagonists to participate
in Phil-Sci-Tech and advance their understanding of truth. Who has the
better "missionaries" to represent truth? This is not an unfair contest
when you consider that Cynthia has a congregation of 80,000,000 fellow
Anglicans to call on and it is likely that about half of them are online.
Be brave. Venture into deepest, darkest cyber-land. Preach and teach the
Gospel of Truth for the benefit of all.

By the time children born now are young adults, North American society will be totally
automated. What are the historical-conceptual-social issues arising from the creation
of this "Culture X"?
