LISTEN TO THOSE CHILLING WORDS

IT has been the clearest hint so far that even the Queen is uneasy at the power wielded by an unelected and secret cabal made up of the so-called "permanent government" and elements within the security services.
The words she uttered to Paul Burrell are now set to reverberate around Whitehall and perhaps even penetrate Thames House, the headquarters of MI5.
The Queen has watched over a Britain dominated for 50 years by a paranoia largely generated by MI5 and a Civil Service mentality forever unwilling to accept the loyalty of generations of working men and women if they belonged to certain trade unions or left wing pressure groups.
The Queen saw Harold Wilson's government fatally undermined by right-wing security service officers at a time when renegade MI5 officer Peter Wright admitted the service had "bugged and burgled its way round London" for much of the postwar period.
The miners have had just cause to believe that they were also targeted by MI5 during the strike not because they were an enemy of the people but because they might have threatened Mrs Thatcher's government.
Nor have Labour politicians been immune from the close and unwanted attention of the security services. Serving MPs and ministers may have been under surveillance. Simply being active in the anti-apartheid campaign or CND has often been more than sufficient for the self-imposed guardians of Britain's moral and political health to start nosing around in your private affairs.
Peter Hain and Peter Mandelson were targeted by MI5.
As the Queen has no doubt cast her mind back repeatedly over the agonies of the last 20 years, the memory of Squidgygate and the rumours that the Security Services had been monitoring Charles and Diana's private conversations must have come back to haunt her.
Diana was not well-liked by some of the security services who saw her extra-marital activities as a huge security problem and her stance on international issues created for them an image of a loose cannon.
I believe that there really can be little doubt left the Queen is referring in large part to the security services when she warned of the "powers at work".
These chillingly prophetic words are clearly based on the Queen's understanding that while MI5 is supposed to devote itself to protecting the state some elements spend more time pursuing their out-of-date moral attitudes to dissent and those who dare to be different. Perhaps it is time that we should all heed the Queen's clear warning and learn to watch our backs as well.
