Poet's Speech at Harvard Banned
Spoke "Words Against Israelis"
Editor's Note: Harvard University President Lawrence Summers is heading
a nationwide campaign branding opposition to war criminal Ariel Sharon
"anti-semitic." Attempts by universities to divest from Israeli
companies are racist, according to Summers' Wonderland logic.
Irish poet Tom Paulin is the latest victim of the witchhunt. His speech
at Harvard has been banned because he once stated that Israeli settlers
should be shot. Assassination advocacy per se is not the issue for
President Summers, since Prime Minister Sharon oversees the world's most
sophisticated and prolific assassination apparatus, one which has killed
hundreds of Palestinians in cold blood, including humanitarians like Dr.
Thabet Thabet. Sharon is on record calling for the assassination of
Yasser Arafat.
What disturbs Summers and the Harvard Sanhedrin is advocacy of the
killing of Holy People. That advocacy alone is grounds for censorship of
a poet's speech at Harvard. White House Press Secretary Ari Fleishcher
is free to speak at Harvard, even though he recently said Saddam Hussein
deserves a bullet. Cartoonist Art Spiegelman, whose "Maus" books are
required reading at the East Coast Establishment prep schools, is
welcome at Harvard, even though he said that World War Two revisionists
deserve a bullet. George W. Bush is welcome at Harvard, even though his
administration recently assassinated a car load of Yemeni terror
"suspects," including an American citizen, in the Israeli tradition of
lawless, extra-judicial "targeted killings."
Jewish journalist Uri Avnery spotlights this molten hypocrisy: "Sharon's
propaganda agents are pouring oil on the flames. Accusing all critics of
his policy of being anti-Semites, they brand large communities with this
mark. Many good people, who feel no hatred at all towards the Jews, but
who detest the persecution of the Palestinians, are now called
anti-Semites...
"...in America...the Jewish establishment is practically straining to
prove that it controls the country. Every few years, the Jewish lobby
'eliminates' an American politician who does not support the Israeli
government unconditionally. This is not done secretly, behind the
scenes, but as a public 'execution'... this was done to the black
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, a young, active, intelligent and very
sympathetic woman. She has dared to criticize the Sharon government,
(and) support Palestinians.... The Jewish establishment found a
counter-candidate, a practically unknown black woman, injected huge sums
into the campaign and defeated Cynthia. All this happened in the open,
with fanfares, to make a public example - so that every Senator and
Congressperson would know that criticizing Sharon is tantamount to
political suicide."
Criticizing Sharon and the terrorist Talmudic settlers he bankrolls and
promotes, is also literary suicide, as an Irish poet whose voice has
been silenced, is learning amidst the lofty ivory towers of a once great
American university, now a citadel of Israeli megalomania and thought
control.
Harvard Speech Canceled
Concerns Voiced on Poet's Words Against Israelis

A Harvard University speech by an award-winning Irish poet was canceled
yesterday after Harvard president Lawrence H. Summers and several
professors and students complained about the poet's verbal attacks on
US-born Jewish settlers and Israel's treatment of Palestinians.
The poet, Tom Paulin, was scheduled to deliver a public reading on
campus tomorrow evening. While students and professors were organizing a
boycott of the speech, Summers expressed his own concerns about Paulin
in two recent conversations with members of Harvard's English
department, which had invited Paulin to speak.
Summers has become a prominent critic of what he sees as anti-Semitic
activities on college campuses. Through a spokesman, Summers said
yesterday, ''My position was that it was for the department to decide,
and I believe the department has come to the appropriate decision.''
Paulin, who also teaches at Oxford University, has been a longtime
critic of Israel on British television news programs and in his own
writing; last year, for instance, he published a poem referring to the
Israeli Army as a "Zionist SS." He gained notoriety this year when he
was quoted in an Egyptian newspaper, al-Ahram Weekly, describing
Brooklyn-born Jews moving to Israeli settlements as "Nazis" and
"racists" and saying that they "should be shot dead."
A Harvard official said yesterday that English department members were
"in
ignorance" about Paulin's views when they invited him last winter to
deliver the prestigious Morris Gray poetry reading. English department
members said Paulin's selection was based solely on his poetry, which
has explored sectarian violence in Northern Ireland and won several
prizes, including the Somerset Maugham Award.
The English department and Paulin mutually agreed to cancel the speech,
according to a Harvard statement. Efforts to reach Paulin at Oxford were
unsuccessful. There was some division in Harvard's English department
over the cancellation, with two members telling the Globe that it was
appropriate, but another member saying it was "an insult to free
expression and the department's independence."
