CAIRO - Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has called for Israel to come under the same international pressure as Iraq to give up its weapons of mass destruction, and urged the United Nations to pass a resolution to ban the Jewish state from holding these weapons.
Speaking in a new parliamentary session Saturday, Mubarak accused Israel of lacking the political will to negotiate and reach a peace settlement with the Palestinians and end the ongoing vicious cycle of bloodshed in the region.
- Despite several [peace] initiatives, plans and road maps, Israel does not have the political will to enter into serious negotiations to establish a sovereign Palestinian state and to withdrawal from Syrian and Lebanese territories, Mubarak said.
In his speech before the Peoples Assembly, Egypts President said that one of the elements of comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East is to have the region cleansed from weapons of mass destruction, starting with Israel.
The Egyptian leader pinpointed that UN Security Resolution 1441 passed unanimously on November 08, requiring Iraq to disarm its alleged weapons of mass destruction or face serious consequences, should be applied to Israel alike.
We are still demanding the application of the same measures to Israel, Mubarak said, emphasizing that the Jewish state should get rid of all its capabilities in the field of weapons of mass destruction.
Hurled with a loud clatter of applause, he also said his countrys support for ongoing efforts to have Iraqs weapons capability inspected, was equally matched with a determination to put Israel under the same inspection.
Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear warheads, and Egypt and other Arab states have persistently called for world pressure to oblige Israel to give up its nuclear weapons. In a Nov. 10 resolution, the Arab League urged the Security Council to force Israel to abandon these weapons.
