As EU, UN Condemn Israel, Tel Aviv Forges Al-Qaeda to Justify Its Policies

By Our Staff Writer

TEHRAN - Pressured by worldwide condemnations, particularly by EU and UN, the Israeli regime has forged an Al-Qaeda group in the occupied territories to justify its repressive policies.

Palestinian security forces arrested a group of Palestinians for collaborating with Israel and posing as operatives of Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda terrorist network, a senior official said Saturday.

The arrests come two days after Israel's Ariel Sharon charged Al-Qaeda militants were operating in Gaza and in Lebanon, AFP reported.

"The Palestinian Authority arrested a group of collaborators who confessed they were working for Israel, posing as Al-Qaeda operatives in the Palestinian territories," said the official, on condition of anonymity. He said the alleged collaborators sought to "discredit the Palestinian people, justify every Israeli crime and provide reasons to carry out a new (military) aggression in the Gaza Strip."

Talking to the TEHRAN TIMES, an analyst said that Al-Qaeda is a notorious organization known for its terrorist nature. We do not have proper information about the origin of this organization.

But at this stage it is synonymous with terrorism.

Given the anti-Al-Qaeda sentiment in the post-September 11 era, it is but natural that any activity in the name of this notorious organization draws sharp criticism and condemnation. This is why Israel tries to carry out some activities in the name of this organization in the occupied territories in order to justify its state terrorism, Mohammad Mohseni said.

Referring to the EU and European condemnation of Israel, he said, another reason is that Sharon is under pressure worldwide for his atrocities against the Palestinian nation.

The European Union Saturday joined the United Nations in strongly condemning an Israeli raid on a Gaza Strip refugee camp in which 10 Palestinians, including two UN employees were killed.

The incursion into Al-Bureij Camp, branded as a "massacre" by the Palestinians," also prompted the U.S. State Department to urge Israel to consider the consequences of its military actions in the occupied territories.

The Palestinians died early Friday when some 40 Israeli tanks and armored vehicles, backed by helicopters, stormed the densely populated camp.

The raid cast a pall over celebrations of the Muslim Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, as did a failed arrest attempt in the West Bank Friday evening, in which an Islamic activist was shot dead.

When Israeli troops rolled out of the camp near Deir al-Balah, 19 Palestinians had also been wounded, five seriously, Palestinian medical sources said.

Four members of the same family were killed when their house was hit by a tank shell, they added.

The EU's Danish presidency said it "strongly condemns military or other violent actions directed indiscriminately against a civilian neighborhood.

"There can be no justification for the high number of killed and injured as a result of last night's Israeli incursion into the El-Bureij Refugee Camp in Gaza," a statement said. "Neither this nor any other actions causing civilian casualties will bring security to the Israeli public. On the contrary, military and violent actions from both sides only serve to breed more hatred and undermine the attempts by the parties and by the international community to bring about reconciliation and a negotiated end to the conflict." Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller denounced the "excessive use of force against innocent civilians."

"It's deeply tragic ... being a witness to such operations that we strongly condemn because they do nothing but stoke the flames of hate and create even more terrorism," he said.

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which runs the camp, said two of its employees were among the dead and that it would launch an investigation.

"I must condemn what appears to be the indiscriminate use of heavy firepower in a densely populated civilian area. UNRWA will carry out a detailed inquiry into the deaths," UNRWA Commissioner General Peter Hansen said in a statement.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said he was "gravely disturbed by the Israeli military attack," while the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello, also slammed the loss of life.

However, one of the UNRWA employees, teacher Alham al-Wawi, the sole woman killed in the raid, was identified by Hamas as a member of its political wing.

Nabil abu Rudeina, a senior aide to Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat, condemned the raid. "This is a new massacre and crime against our unarmed people," he said.

The Palestinians also accused Sharon of trying to piggyback on the U.S.-led "war against terrorism" to strengthen his military operations against activists in the territories.

Both the Lebanese government and Hizbollah made similar statements.
