IDF tank kills woman, injures her 3 children By Amos Harel A Palestinian woman was killed by Israel Defense Forces tank fire yesterday evening, close to the southern Gaza settlement of Rafiah Yam. The woman was identified as Nahla Ajel, 36, a resident of Rafah. Four others were wounded in the incident, including Ajel's three children, aged 10, 7 and 5, and another woman, aged 26. Palestinian witnesses said Ajel and her three children were walking to their home in Rafah near the border fence separating Gaza from Egypt when IDF troops opened fire from a nearby position. An IDF tank crew reported that it had identified six armed Palestinians and the area commander authorized machine gun fire on the group, which the soldiers had reported were advancing toward the settlement. Military sources told Ha'aretz the circumstances of the incident were not yet clear. They said that it was uncertain whether the tank crew had missed the armed cell it had identified and accidentally hit the Palestinian civilians, or whether the identification was mistaken in the first place. The IDF regional command will conduct an inquiry into the incident today. The area between Rafah and the Southern Katif Bloc has been the scene of several infiltration attempts over the past few months and several terrorist cells have been hit, however on a number of occasions Palestinian civilians mistakenly identified as armed gunmen have also been hit. © Copyright 2002 Ha`aretz.
