I just tried cherrypicking it. It needs several individual commits and then there are some small conflicts and extra edits to do. I haven't checked in detail if that misses or sneakily mis-merged something. And, after sleeping on it, I changed my mind about not needing to XFreePixmap() the icons from the WM_HINTS.
