PS
Something I only recently discovered (today): xbacklight

I can now use calls of xbacklight (with -inc 5 and -dec 5) bound to Meta+F8
and Meta+F9 to raise and lower screen brightness. This requires Fn+arrow
keys on the Dell and does not work well because the Dell keeps going into
automatic screen control mode, despite my attempts to turn it off in the
bios.

So I can now use xbacklight to counter its unwanted changes.

I wonder how many other goodies Linux has that I don't know about.
