I found it. It's a setting in the system configuration stuff for SuSE. From the YaST2 -> System -> /etc/sysconfig Editor app, I selected Desktop -> X_MOUSE_CURSOR and cleared the entry (default). After restarting X, I have my familiar and borind icons back again.
