Hi! All.
Just got home from B.C. and thought I'd drop you a note and tell you
about the day at the Desert Cultural Center in Osoyoos, B.C. My family
and myself spent the better part of a day at this place and really
enjoyed it. They have day programs all summer that teach about the
animals and plants that inhabit the area. As well as which ones are
uniquely cherished to them and their uses. The Okanogan Tribe have
land that runs most of the way through the Okanogan valley, from
almost to the border to past Penticton. They have done well as they
have many orchards, run 2 golf courses, and have one of the biggest
winery's in the area. Inkameep is the reserve in the area (Nk' Mip)
for short. They also had the residential schools in some areas, but
the chief here had talked them into putting a school right on the
reserve which saved some of the kids from being taken away. They
speak, (I hope this is how to spell it correctly) shilyk. Anyway we
spent the day hiking through the area on a guided tour, it is hard to
believe how they traveled and lived, off the land as well, in this
desert area (as nothing much grows here except where it is irrigated)
there is no shortage of sage or cactus though. It was a day well
spent, we learnt alot about their culture, which I owe to this class
as it has peaked my interest to learning more and I don't think it
would have been one of our stops otherwise, the kids even bought some
handmade crafts and such from the area. Anyway just thought I would
share this adventure with all of you.
